Ground the engine to the frame - the starter motor is trying to ground through the wiring harness.

 

The ground from the frame to motor was taken off and cleaned and put back on and still had a spark come from the negative battery cable and got really hot any thoughts?

 

If the neg battery cable is getting hot, it has a poor connection either at the battery terminal or the fame connection.

 

I cleaned all the grounds now the positive battery cable is getting hot what do you think.

 

You need to find out what is drawing all the current to create the heat - install an ammeter in the battery pos connection to see how much current is being drawn and then start disconnecting components to see what it has to unplugged to stop the current draw - start with the rec/reg - that is the single component that causes most problems.

 

what is rec/reg ??

 

rec/reg and RR are short for rectifier/regulator - the rec/reg unit is responsible for changing the AC voltage generated by the alternator (also referred to as the stator) into DC voltage to charge the battery - the voltage regulator is built into the unit to eliminate two separate components and the additional wiring and connections. If a regulator fails, it will generally overcharge the battery because the alternator is capable of generating about 100 volts - the rectifier cuts the AC voltage appx. in half during the conversion to DC and the regulator then has to limit the voltage to the battery to no more than 14.8 volts. The rectifier can fail in two ways - the diodes may open (like a fuse blowing) and reduce or eliminate the DC voltage available to charge the battery resulting in an undercharging condition, or the diodes can short out and become like a piece of wire allowing AC voltage to the battery - when this happens it can both overcharge the battery while the engine is running and (in the case of both a failed regulator and shorted diodes) short the battery to ground causing the battery to discharge when the key is off and overcharge when the engine is running - both conditions ruin the battery in a short time.
