I have a 1998 sportsman 500 I got from my aunt and uncles that are 80 years old . They bought it new and and used it around the farm some so over al it’s in good shape when I got it the starter wouldn’t catch every time you hit the button and would slowly turn over. So I figured it was the battery and put a new battery on it and still did the same thing. So I ordered a starter and solenoid thinking that would fix the issue and it still does the same thing. Does anyone have any resolve for what is happening.

Lol you’re the automated greeter.

Assuming the cable and ground are good, check the bendix. Footwell and pull start cover has to come off. Is is responsible for engaging, turning, and releasing the ring gear on the flywheel to crank the engine. You could clean well or replace. They’re not that expensive aftermarket. Check the bushings as well, they get wallered out over time.

Does the cord get ripped from your hand when you pull start? Much more involved but the cam decompression device can also cause hard cranking. Your issue seems to be with the bendix though as it doesn’t always engage.

You've got a ways to go yet - you still have the fuel system to perform maintenance on - first determine the engine will run

How much experience do you have on small engines?

Since you installed a new cam and rockers, I presume you have a service manual and verified the valve timing to be correct and the cam chain tensioner was released prior to installation of the tensioner setting spring.

So how much compression does it have since installation of the cam?
