Is your Sportsman 335 1999 misfiring in forward gears as if a limiter (like used in reverse) is activated? Is the spark plug and exhaust black? I was advised it could be the CDI unit, a worn cam, faulty fuel pump or carb. I eliminated all these and after 2 years of trying to sort it out I finally sorted it with two minor things -
1) The sponge spacer normally positioned to support the air intake and the breathing pipe had deteriorated and the top of the air intake was hard up against the fuel tank. This meant the air intake was restricted causing the engine to run rich. By fitting a new sponge to space the air intake from the tank solved the problem.
2) I fitted a new K&N filter after the misfire had been resolved to make sure teh engine breaths properly. The spark plug is now a normal running colour and the exhaust a healthy grey not black.
Total cost £30.
