Hey guys. New to quads, bought the xplorer 400 2 stroke the other day. Bikes in great condition, only 4000km on it. It sat for about 6 years. I have put maybe 3 hours on it, and while going through some tall grass and rough trail it flashed the temp light. This is weird, because it has plenty of coolant. Shortly after this, I notice gray oil/water coming down onto the frame near the recoil.

I changed the counter balance oil (lots of water came out, then goopy gray stuff.) And filled with 75ml of 10w30. After a quick drive we took the airbox off to see into it easier. We noticed this

Auto part Pipe Plumbing Suspension

Spout thing was spewing the oil (which was still gray because of the residual goop) all over the place. The tiny spout sits very close to the top of the recoil.. in the picture you can see the carb

Can anyone tell me what the spout is, and whats happening? Is this a bad pump seal? Blown head gasket?

Thanks!

pretty sure that is the counter balancer vent and it should have a piece of tubing on it running up to the top frame member. The counter balancer uses 10W30 oil so the fact that it's gray tells me there is moisture either from the uncapped vent or the seal to the water pump is shot and coolant is mixing in (which is a common problem on older polaris 400 2 strokes). A google search on it will reveal lots of info.

Yes, it's the vent for the counter balance drive gear box - getting oil or coolant or both coming out of it typically indicates either or both the water pump seals or crankshaft seals have failed.

So if I run tubing to the top frame member, should it be capped off? Or is this an overflow sort of deal where if I cap it off it makes my problem much worse?

And run a piece of tubing up to the upper cross member and do not cap it... it's a vent to prevent pressure building up in the counter balancer "compartment" when the engine warms up.
