I've got a 2001 Sportsman 500 that won't start, when i hit the switch i hear a clicking noise coming from a device that is mounted next to the battery that i am assuming is some kind of solenoid. The battery is new so I'm sure thats not the problem
The clicking you hear is coming from the starter solenoid. What i would do is take a test light or a volt meter and check for power to the solenoid, and power from the solenoid to the starter, if there's power at the starter you could have one or more of these problems....starter bushings wore, starter drive gear wore, or the drive gear stuck or rusty. Hope that helps. Those are some of the problems i've run into. Let me know how it goes.
If the solenoid is clicking, then it is getting power.Check your wire to the starter from the solenoid and if it is tight then start with what imhuntingcrazy said.I just went through the same thing and the starter wire(from the solenoid) was so loose, when I pulled on it to check tightness,it came off.
