I'm new to the post hopefully someone can help!
I had my 500 out and going through some water 2' deep
And the atv stalled and would not start back up. I checked
Water in the air box and oil nothing. A friend towed me a couple
Of miles and Tried again and it started right back up idled for
45 min started driving (10 min) and it stalled. Next day it started and idled
Rode around no issues. Started everyday for 3 days just a bump of
The key no riding and then on the 4th day it would only turnover and backfire sometimes Through the carb and sometimes through the exhaust.
Checked for gas-good
Checked for spark-good but the wire shocked me so I ordered a new coil, wire
And plug. (Still haven't came in but I would think it should still start)
Any suggestions please help?

If you got shocked, I wouldn't expect much until you fix the wire issue personally. If you're not isolated I am guessing you are losing spark at times.

That's what I hope. Just for giggles I removed the spark plug attached it to the wire and laid it on the tire, turned over the engine and the plug still had spark. From my understanding it should not do that. Isn't it supposed to be grounded?

True. Usually you have to touch the tip of the plug to metal to see it spark.

Hi I just bought a 01 sportsman ho 500 and it backfires through carb and exhaust when you give it gas and it’s in time and valves are good don’t know what else to check and compression seemed good

Check the compression, try a NEW spark plug and then service the carb

It's like baking a cake - if you have adequate compression, spark, spark at the right time, fuel and air in the right ratio and an unobstructed intake and exhaust, it will run, the law of physics rules this.
