hello all
headpan here..
so my 4x4 was inguaging while it was in 2 wheel option..
i did my reasearch and found that i need an amature plate and bearing retainer.
my questions are this
I wanted to upgrade the bearing retainer to the aftermarket aluminum ones for sale, the polaris dealer says no, keep it the stock plastic, as this is a weak point , and everything needs a weak point. he says if i use the aftermarket aluminum one that i could cause more damage if things (need ) to break.. make sense?
anyone have a bad time using the aluminum one?

and do you guys think i can handle this myself.. a harley wrench for 25 yrs.
but never opened up something like a hillards differential...
any input would be greatly apperciated

Does it engage while you spin the tires in 2WD?

I had the same problem on my 600 twin. I was thinking that something was broken and i was about to take the diff apart, but i did more research and found that the front diff fluid has to be clean and the right amount in order to work properly. I changed the fluid and the old fluid was black very dirty. I flushed it couple of times and after that i worked awesome. I suggest you first change the diff fluid and if it still doesnt solve the problem take the diff apart. Its worth a shot.

IIRC the aluminum cages are only available for 2006+

EDIT: I guess they are for non EFI... not sure why '04-'05 700 EFI's are excluded though

its a carburated 2004.5. a split year with different differentals
this one is made by hillards.
i saw a all balls rebuild kit which included eveythig
I may go this route
i changed my fluid . the fluid ran low from seeping seals i didnt notice
but i heard this problem is from the weak cage, and leaving the ground
ill most likely try to do it myself
its already out and that was the hard part
