2005 500 efi, piston burned/scored bad. Gouged cylinder bad, deeper than deep. In looking for a piston and cylinder, the efi piston, rings and cylinder are a different part number than carb models supposedly. Lower end parts are the same numbers.

eBay has piston and cylinder kits quite reasonably. They cover many years (1996-2012). Does anybody have any experience in using an ebay piston/cylinder kit on an efi even though efi parts are listed differently?

Has anybody run across this before?

So the same piston was used in more models than the same cylinder was.

Since the cylinder is a steel liner, it's not commonly severely damaged by seizure - I would have the cylinder bored out and fit with a new oversized piston.

OH - BTW, there was no EFI model of the 500 Sportsman offered in 2005 - the only 500 in 05 was model A05MH50AB, but the piston was the same for the 06 Sportsman 500 EFI model A06MH50AQ and A06MH50FC

Thank you so much. I will verify if what I was told about the year (2005) is correct. The owner said is was a 2005 and was a dealer demo of some kind - it may have been a sample of what was planned.

Again, thank you so much for the info. I'm assuming the ebay piston/cylinder kits at about $106 US will work.

A cheap QUALITY piston (Namura) is $116 and you can get a piston/cylinder kit for $106? It's your machine and your money, but if you just want it running so you can off it, go for it and get rid of it.

It goes without saying the $106 kit (shipped to my door) is probably a Chinese knockoff. That said, the atv doesn't really have a lot of hours on it and the OEM piston/cyl didn't win any honors for longevity.

The kits are on ebay. That's the cheapest I found, there are similar kits with filters, etc for more. I'll agree these are not equal to OEM parts, but then again, fit and finish are expected to be up to normal standards. Hey, I'm no big fan of sending money to China, but when you realize that alot of the OEM parts that come on the atv new are Pacific rim origin already, I'm not sure I'm real scared of cheap clone parts. If the factory puts Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian or whatever parts on them at the factory, it won't bother me to put a cheap piston/cylinder on it. Is the steel substandard? Piston cast and machined poorly? Doubtful.

The real problem with this atv is that it is a 2005 and it does have efi, which (by the books) technically doesn't exist. It was a prototype that made it out the doors for dealers to familiarize themselves with and somehow it got sold. Looking at part numbers in books is what got me here in the first place. The gentleman that posted all the piston/cylinder info above was very helpful; now I pretty much know a generic piston will work. The score in the cylinder is deep and after measuring it, I don't think boring the cylinder to max oversize will get rid of it.

I also wanted to know if anybody else had experienced this also and so far, it looks like this is not common.

What is it that makes you so certain it's an 05 with EFI? What's the VIN or model number?

It was for the 500 - 700 & 800's got EFI in 05 - the OP in under the false impression he's got a prototype probably because it was manufactured sometime after July of 05 or a dealer told him it was a prototype and sold it for $2000 more than the average asking price - the VIN will be the defining factor.

Yep, its hard for some folks to wrap their head around the idea that you can have a 2006 model machine built in 2005. Apparently they think the assembly plant workers change everything over for the next year model's production on New Years Eve lol.
