2012 Polaris Sportsman 850 EPS

Good Morning,
I purchased a used 2012 Polaris Sportsman 850 EPS roughly 5 months ago that had 600 miles on the machine. There was only one oil change done on the ATV since the original owner had it and I can tell it is starting to run a little rough as I have put on another 200 miles on it since I have owned it. I am looking to change the oil and have a question on oil filters.

I live in Minnesota, is there a local place like Fleet Farm/Auto Zone/Walmart that would sell the correct oil filter? If not, where would be the best place to order the filter from online?

Also, my EPS light came on last week and the EPS stopped working completely, has anyone else had this happen? I was going to look at the power steering fluid to make sure that is filled.

I am a first ATV owner, any constructive suggestions with care and maintenance on this model is really appreciated!

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hey Jeremy welcome to the club. To answer your questions in order: purchasing oils and filters from the big box stores you mentioned I know a lot of guys use Rotella or Mobil One 0w-40. As for a filter idk the cross reference for it so hopefully some XP guys chime in. Personally I prefer Polaris brand oils and filters. I generally make my online purchases from https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com. Now for your EPS light that is most likely the sign of a weak battery. I would suggest putting it on a float charger and see if that remedies the situation. These machines have power steering units that are powered by electricity not hydraulics like an automobile, so no fluid needed. As for any additional things to do on the wheeler I would say proper maintenance is critical and that would entail greasing, oil changes (differentials, transmission, and engine), and air filter. I change my motor oil and drive-line fluids every 50hrs. I grease the machine every 3-4 rides ie days of riding. Air filter 2-3 times a year depending on how dry it is and how dusty the rides are. There are also a ton of mods to do but that would require more info from you. Good luck, that 850 is a beast of a machine especially for a first timer.

Here's a link to Polaris 2520799 oil filter cross reference POLARIS 2520799 - Cross reference oil filters

Personally, I would not use a Fram or any filter that has a part number that starts with PH (indicates Fram manufactured)

I like Hi Flo filters and have used them for years without any issues. I use HF303 which is not in the list so I don't know far I would trust the published list.
I really appreciate everyone's suggestions and information, as a first-time owner, I want to make sure this puppy lasts and is running top notch. As for the battery, I have heard switching from an 18ah battery to a 30ah battery can make a significant improvement in peformance, thoughts? Thinking about it now, I installed a 30 inch light bar prior to winter and since then I have had some of these small issues arise, think that is still drawing power even if the light bar is off?

Thanks again!
Jeremy
Personally I would up grade to a quality AGM battery. I use Odyssey batteries as an up grade in all my equipment that requires a battery.
Hey Jeremy, Welcome from MN... as far as oils I have just stuck with Polaris.. I also have the 2012 and I will tell you exactly whats wrong with the EPS.. it was a common issue on the 2012's and once I changed it out no issues, The EPS relay is upside down and collects water and corrodes the internals or shorts out, and I think it is like a 10Amp relay from the factory, but there is a replacement relay that is better and higher amp, it is a little bit of a pain to get to but it is right under the left side of the main plastics on the side the gas tank is on. Just pull that little hood and pry open the plastics or take them off... I will do a quick search too for ya!

Hi jeremy. Good news is you bought a machine that did not have the front diff issues that started in the 2013 models. Bad need is that is you have a machine that might experience the timing gear slippage prevalent in the prior to 2014 models. Do research on the forum for that particular issue and watch for the warning signs that it's starting if you can catch it early you might save yourself thousands of dollars in a complete engine rebuild or replacement.

Have a good friend who works in sales at a Polaris and Suzuki dealership. He has stated on multiple occasions that the XP series is basically a 2000 mile machine. Meaning that somewhere plus or minus 500 miles at 2,000 miles you were going to get to do things like replace bushings one or two wheel bearings perhaps a belt or shocks etcetera. I did all the bushings and all my shocks on my 2010 XP 850 at right around the 2000 Mark and if you read the forms long enough you will notice that is a trend. Fortunately I stayed out of mud and water and never had an issue with any of my wheel bearings or Knuckles or steering. All of them were rock-solid tight when I sold the machine to another member on the board.

So the other good news is you are not even halfway to that point so you should be able to get some good riding done before you have to think about putting more money in.

However the other bad news is the EPS units on the XP series are notorious for failing even with very few miles on them and when they do everybody knows they are an expensive fix. By all means I would go with a new AGM battery but set your expectations accordingly. I wouldn't place any money that that will fix the problem you are probably looking at buying a new EPS unit.

You will see you literally hundreds of posts on this form and others regarding this oil being better than that oil for all manner of areas weather differential motor Etc I've gone through that phase and returned to Polaris OEM filters and fluids for the simple reason it provides one less area of discussion with the dealer when they are discussing problems. I never buy a new machine without the max warranty I can get on it usually 5 years so I want to keep OEM filters and oil in play to negate any possibility of a denial by a warranty. Yes I know all the laws in the rules but at the end of the day I'm interested in riding rather than fighting with the dealer and or polaris I'm interested in riding versus wrenching and I want as few headaches and stredd with a hobby that's supposed to provide fun and relaxation as possible.

Sounds like lollygagger might have your eps situation figured out as well good luck!
I really appreciate everyone's information, I will join the FB page today!
One more question, when I shut my machine off, after about 3 seconds it makes about 5 or 6 clicks from the front end. Is that normal? The guy I bought it from said that it has always done that but I am wondering if that is the timing gear slippage Flyinghigh was talking about.

The machine is very powerful, I just want to make sure it is running at optimal performance.

Thanks again everyone, I appreciate the help/suggestions and not telling me how dumb I am... Still in the learning stage.

That clicking is the fuel system priming for the next start up, pressurizing if you will.
I will disagree with the statement about these 2012 XP's being 2000 mile machines, I am almost to 5000, so with proper maintenance (grease, Grease, grease it after every 3 or 4 rides, especially if you ride lots of mud - use a marine grade grease too) and proper use of low gear you should be fine... I did a full bushing replacement at 3200 miles and I only did that based on comments from everyone on here and I only had one that was bad on a shock, the rest were still nice and tight, I did find one other that needed to be replaced, but doing all 64 (I think that many maybe 32) was a pain... so don't believe everything you hear. I just put on my second set of rear wheel bearings, and considering I hit every puddle/pond I can find so I can't complain. I have replaced other wear items too, but I am running 30" Terms and I am still on my original Stock axles (knock on wood, LOL)..

Two questions:

I don't go through mud with this machine, it stays fairly dry besides this time of year when I plow. Should I be greasing it every 4 rides? If so, do you know where the grease certs are or have any place I can find that info?
When you talk about low gear, is that referring to being in L vs. H? When I am plowing, I usually do it in H and when I am just cruising I am in L. Does that sound right?

Thanks again,
Jeremy

and why was the password restriction imposed ? most likely cause many were using the same logon and password on many user group sites, very likely FB user, im glad they made the change as its good practice, diff site and same user name-ok, same password- not good, jmo.
@ jeremy when plowing use L, it will save ur belt, grease as often as u feel necessary, but not mudding u wont need every 4 rides, and K & N has a filter that crosses to a popo, most auto parts should have it
Only use K&N filters if you don't have any dust in your locale - they are over priced, high maintenance and fragile - can be damaged when servicing - just put a stock Polaris filter in when needed
Hey flyinghigh what are the diff issues that you said started in the 13 models?
Good Morning,

Last night I changed the oil and both front and rear differential fluids, it was much easier than I anticipated it would be!

As for the EPS.... I took the 30 amp fuse out, cleaned it with a wire brush and put some dielectric grease on it along with doing the same to the relay under the plastic. I am still not getting the EPS light to turn off and it is still not working on the machine. You had mentioned that I can replace the whole EPS relay with a stronger one, do you have a part number or link to where I can find that?

Thanks again,
Jeremy
lllygagger77 Got any more info on the "better" EPS relay?
