Hi, I just bought a 2012 Sportsman 800 EFI that only had 412 miles and 42 hours. I have had out on the trails a couple of times. Today after riding some gravel roads and getting home to unload the thing won't start. It was throwing a code 54 but it never had a hot light. I have disconnected the battery and cleaned the terminals, I have checked the temp sensor and it reads 1360 Ohms cold. I turned the key on while the sensor was disconnected and the fan started right up. The code cleared after I reconnected the battery but the check engine light is still on and it isn't giving any codes. I'm at a loss. I have searched for a while but haven't found anything that helps. Any ideas?

A little vague...so here is my two cents:
Welcome to the forum!

Is it turning over at all or when you turn the key do you get nothing, but lights and the pod will still work? If its not turning over, is the starter solenoid clicking....anything? If your not even getting clicking from the solenoid, you need to check the battery and ensure it is good.

Sorry for the vague info. Here is what it was doing:

Turn on the key and the fuel pump kicks on and the pod lights up. Turn the key to start and there was only a click. Check engine code was 54. I opened the fuse panel, found a rat nest and some chewed wires. I checked the fuses and they were all good. I repaired the chewed wires but that did not fix the problem. Next I checked the battery voltage it was 12.5 volts. I found the temp sensor and checked it with the meter and it was 1300 ohms cold. I turned on the key withe the temp sensor unplugged and the fan immediately came on. Next I disconnected the battery and cleaned the terminals. This cleared the code 54 but it still wouldn't do anything but click when I tried to start it. Next I checked the voltage on the hot side of the starter solenoid and it was the same as the battery voltage. Then I checked the starter side while attempting to start and it didn't show voltage. All these checks were referenced to ground. I then used a jumper across the solenoid to attempt to start with no luck. I then put the charger on the battery on the 35 amp fast charge setting and was able to get the bike to start. It has started every time since. I took the battery to be tested at an auto parts store and they said there were no bad cells but that the charge was low so I put the battery on the charger overnight. I did order a starter solenoid that I will be installing. The only thing now that I find odd is that the break lights are on whenever the key is on. The bulbs have two elements and one is on all the time and one comes on when I pull the break lever. I'm not sure if that is normal or not.
