I have a 2014 Polaris sportsman 570 touring that I inherited, It has less than 1k miles and I know was very well maintained and garage kept. A long while ago when it was running I took it for a ride and noticed it felt a little slower than usual but not like super noticeable. A week or so after that I went to go take it for a ride and it started making a knocking sound and lost allot of its power. It don’t have the torque like it used to and goes very slow, and it sometimes will slip past reverse when trying to put it in reverse. I took it to a Atv mechanic he did a diagnostic and told me I need a new transmission and he would fix it all for $3,500… I made a post on a Polaris sportsman FB group and was told to see another mechanic by allot of people because it sounds like a clutch issue. How do I know if it’s for sure transmission or clutch problem??? Thanks

I did have the belt changed, that’s what I thought at first also. I forgot to add that in the post. Also I was told before I got the quad that my dad changed the clutch on it not to long ago. He wasn’t a mechanic but knew how to do the basic maintenance, I’m just wondering if he possibly installed it wrong or something if that could be an issue?

What clutch did he put in it? OEM? eBay special?

Time to pop the cover bud. Give it a good inspection take a couple of pictures also post them up. See if you can find a part number on those clutches both the secondary and primary. We'll try to help you cross reference and make sure that you have the right clutches on there. Also if you get a video of the clutch is running through the RPM range that would be helpful as well.

I’m not sure how to send pictures on here but I just took the cover off and the primary clutch says “Polaris USA magnesium” and the secondary says “Team industry X” When I find out how to post the pictures I will send them

Those are Polaris OEM clutches. What you describe sounds more like a secondary clutch that needs servicing or replaced. You should probably take it to a reputable mechanic.
I don't think it would have a tranny bad with less than 1k miles and losing power doesn't really sound like a tranny problem. I have heard some of the early 570s having a bearing go bad though. You can buy a complete new tranny for less than $2500 if that is the problem. You could also drain the tranny oil into a clean pan and inspect under bright light for metal shavings if you do think its something inside.
