2017 Polaris HighLifter Electronic Power Steering FORCES handle bars to left

Hello,

I have a Highlifter with 20 hours on it. Was riding Saturday when the handlebars pulled very hard to the left. Luckily I was only going 10 mph. I weigh 195lbs and it took all I had to straighten the handle bars. I eventually had to pull the ESP fuse so I could drive it back to the parking lot. Has anyone had this issue? Again IMO the steering should never control the front wheels without drive input. If I was going 30 mph the result could have been disastrous! I initiated a case with Polaris but it appears my 2017 falls outside the recall period.

What you are describing is pretty spooky. Apparently nobody has any answer for you... Me included. Those units have a torque sensor that senses input on the bars and runs the motor accordingly. It also prevents bump steer and I think is also tied into the speedo to lessen steering force the faster you go.
You might check wiring to it and see if there could be damage, moisture or corrosion in the connector. That's about all I can think of other than going to the stealership with it and I already know what they will want to do... replace it!
Hey Max, here's a really good read and possible solution to your problem. Its in the Polaris General forum but sounds spot-on as to what's happening with your machine. Couple good links included about the EPS system along with part numbers. If you're up to the task, I'd say your unit is fixable.

Wow!!! Thanks is exactly what mine is doing and must be the torque sensor. Only 20 hours unreal. I don't even remember hitting anything hard. Be a party pulling the PWS module out. Internet is plagued with my complaint but Polaris never hear of it before........
Installed new battery, old one was definitely bad. Made zero difference. Anyone have a service manual on how to remove EPS? Option two is 2017 Polaris Highlifter with 20 hours for $9400 EPS doesn't work. Like new except steering.....
I think I could find it if I had a detailed description and maybe a picture of the sensor. I've looked at a bunch but not sure of which it might be.

I have a service manual but not electronic. I can look this afternoon when i am out in the shop. My machine is a 2018, but they are the same.
That would be great if you could find how to remove EPS in service manual!!!!! I called super ATV and they have a COMPLETE aftermarket kit what will work for $800. Bad news it comes with a 3 year warranty!!! I prefer 6 months like Polaris gives..... I called three dealers one has a 6 week back log, the other 4 weeks with horrible reviews and one was pretty open. Problem is I don't want to just waste time and a diagnosis fee. Reviews on the web indicated Polaris doesn't step up on repairs but there was a recall on EPS but mine wasn't included. No doubt I can remove mine and replace I am pretty mechanically inclined. I just hate to do a lot of work if a reflash would get it.
The high lifter battery is a YIX20HL where my Waverunner is a YTX20HL. I called Uusas and they said the YIX20HL (has I instead of T) is for cold climates. Soooo if you live south of the frost line then get the YTX20HL as its better for warmer climates and is about $30 cheaper. I should have gotten same for my Highlifter but just found this out. I am contemplating selling so I figured I would put new battery in waverunner and sale highlifter with waverunner battery as its a year old and noticed the difference in letters.
The only part number i know for the torque sensor is from another post. I need to remove mine and open up to confirm TT electronics PBT-GF35.

Oh, I thought you were already pulling it out to try a repair.
I think that number is a Polaris-specific thing.
Do I understand correctly that you're just gonna replace it?
I'd like to try to find a replacement/repair for the torque sensor failure.
If I pull it out I will disassemble as I have nothing to loose. I do feel its the torque sensor dislodged or something, I could be completely wrong. I put a battery in today. I thought that would fix it as the old battery was weak. The key is the power steering is working just working incorrectly. IMO this is different than not working. Not working would be much safer, this unit turns itself with no driver input and no error on display.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much. I could have it out in an hour. No where as bad as I thought. I just got to figure if I want to waste time with dealer. Guess it doesn't cost anything but time. Good news is there is two used and one new on ebay for $1100. I keep everybody updated. When I turn the key on voltage on my new battery plummets to 11.5 since the power steering is just ripping to the left. if you give it a little gas it will slam it to the left and then it keeps it pinned. Driving without power steering is definelty doable but I am 195lbs so it could get tiring after awhile, if tire weren't so big it would be like my honda foreman.

Yeah, I'd like to see some good pics of the torque sensor from different angles and measurements if you take it apart. Could be valuable information given that they are apparently prone to failure.
If you replace and don't want to fool with it I might would buy it just to dissect, inspect and see if I can find replacement parts.
When I disassemble you will have ton of pics, if I can't fix, you can have it. I saw pics of one disassembled but don't know if identical to sportsman. Looks like the only thing you can replace without major disassemble is the torque sensor. The key will be to maintain orientation when replacing.

So I opened a case with Polaris. They covered the module I covered labor $325. Again I only had 20 hrs on it. Very pleased with Polaris customer service. The new steering is incredibly easy. I can turn with 1 finger tip. Obviously the shop didn't put everything back together right so I am sorting. I found a fuel tank vent hose pointing down out the left side wheel well. It runs into a T under the instrument hood. I am sure its to prevent overpressurization of tank but pretty sure its not supposed to be located in wheel well. The steering is freaky easy, could get dicey at 40 mph..... Have no idea what wrong with one they removed.
That's pretty awesome that they covered it for you. Let us know what you find if you go in the old one. I'm curious and would like to peek inside. Post some pics if you can.
