I have a 2005 800 sportsman. while plowing snow today it hit 4 wheel drive really hard in reverse. now I only have 4 wheel drive in reverse and nothing going forward. where do I start? looking for ideas thanks very much.

Things do like to break if your tires grab hard in 4x4. Since It works in reverse, I am guessing you might have a cracked sprague cage.

tore it apart today and you were 100 percent correct. it is the Sprague cage but boy are they proud of them. 192.00 dollars for a piece of plastic

Search this site because I'm sure I read somewhere that you can buy John Deere parts ,that are an exact fit and they have steel cages.

I will probably go with the aluminum one if cage on my 700 ever goes out but I have nearly 10 years on the stock plastic one so not sure it matters.

The aluminum one does not fit 2005 and earlier models.

That's good to know.. I had always assumed it was an option but never looked at the actual compatibility.
