Im sure this has been beat to death but I'm in the market for a used 500 Sportsman and I'm just wondering how new I have to go to avoid the camshaft issues that some early 500s had .

It's mostly about maintenance, gotta use synthetic oil, . I've had an 03 500HO for years ,sold it and still going strong. I have an 09 500HO and no problems with it either.

I have read that synthetic oil was a must but I thought some of the earlier years the cam was made out of softer material

It's not so much the metal the cam is made of, but the case hardening process - if the cam is not hardened properly, then it wears prematurely.

I bought an '01 from from a friend. Personally my first quad. Got a great deal because it wasn't running; no start issue. Ended up being low compression. The guy didn't do proper maintenance on the machine either. Cam was fine, showed normal minimal wear. Put a jug kit in it and it fired right up. Of course I had to replace a few other items, but now I have a great running machine that should serve me well for years.

I have also found several 600 and 700 Sportsman from the mid 2000's but the ignition problem worries me

The twins will have their own set of issues I'm sure. Everything breaks down with time and use. If you're mechanically inclined and can do your own work you can save a lot of money. If not, you might want to find something with a warranty...
