I have a 2013 sportsman 850 that is overheating. It started from the very first ride the hot light will come on and engine goes into limp home mode. i have not acctually let it get to the point where antifreeze comes pouring out but i can tell it is exteamly hot. the fan works but only for a short amount of time. If i stop the bike then restart it the fan will run for about 15 sec then shuts off. I have taken it to the dealer multiple times but they say they cannot get it to everheat "i call bs" this is just the start of problems. I was test riding it yesterday and the bike lost all power. when i say lost all power picture taking the battery out of the atv and trying to start it. IT will do absolutly nothing.:motz: I have checked all the fuses and relays in the front fuse box, and connot find anything wrong. I thought maybe i hit the kill switch but its not that either. I have always loved polaris but this one is starting to put a bad taste in my mouth. THIS THING IS BRAND NEW WITH ALLOT OF PROBLEMS somebody please help i just want to ride.
If it's brand new...... for goodness sake take it back and have it covered under warranty!!
Tell them to keep it and keep trying it, put some miles on if they have to. Since you've already taken it in an assuming tried the "nice approach".... Bring it back and GET PISSED OFF!! Tell them you don't want the #@$&ing thing back until it works right or you want your money back!!!! Demand to speak to the owner.... bypass the manager.
I have taken it back 3 times for overheating and they say it is fixed. this bike only has 11 hours on it. forgive me but i am fairly new to the sportsmans we have only had rangers growing up. but what is a CDI box:question:
When the atv would not turn over did you have to jump start it? I would check battery voltage with atv running to make sure it is charging battery and not over charging. For the over heating part my guess would be faulty fan relay, seems like the 2013 have a lot of problems with this. Dealer should take care of this situation no questions asked.
the atv is still not running and dealer is closed today. i checked the battery and it is at 12v. i have checked all the connections to the battery and they are good. there is no power to anything on the bike no lights no display no trying to start when i turn the key. it really is like as if you took the battery out of the atv and that is what i have. no electricity to anything at all. the dealer has replaced the fan relay twice and it still has not solved the oveheating problem. any ideas????
thanks for the help i will check the ground and ignition connections tonight i would like to get it running so i do not have to push it into the back of my truck, but either way its going to the dealer tomorrow i will let you know what they say this time
Looking at the wiring diagram, the problems that you describe leads me too think the ECM having a bad ground, it sends a wake up call too the body control relay that wakes up most things on your atv, including sending a ground too control the fan circuit. If there is too much resistance with the ECM ground when ever a high load is applied too it some circuits depending on resistance will shut down. As the resistance increases over time mor things stop working until nothing works at all. There is a big ground connection under the left fender here the gas goes in. Take off the front plastic and look at all the connections, put dielectric grease on everything and check the plug going into the ECM located under the dash pod behind the battery against the intake air box.
I had the same problem, change this part: Breaker, Circuit, 10 AMP, Sealed part number 2410692, a lot of polaris have the same problem, this breaker send the correct time to the fan when the motor is hot, the normal time that the fan works is aprox 40 - 45 secs.
I personally would push it into the truck and bring it to the dealer..... if it ain't running they'll have to look at it a lot closer, than you just bringing in a "machine with symptom's" for the 3rd or 4th time!! At that rate, they will begin to shrug you & the machine off like chicken little otherwise!!!
I will be taking it into the dealer today. I have a meeting with the owner this time instead of the service manager. Hopfully it will get fixed correctly this time
I had the same problem, change this part: Breaker, Circuit, 10 AMP, Sealed part number 2410692, a lot of polaris have the same problem, this breaker send the correct time to on and off fan when the motor is hot, the normal time that the fan works is aprox 40 - 45 secs every 2-4 minutes depends the weather, speed etc.
I just got a call from the dealer. they said that the fan is possibly bad. The reason they think its bad is because it is "drawing 15 amps on a 10 amp circuit" thus causing the circuit breaker to fail. I do not know if this is true but i sure hope it fixes my problem.onder:
I finally get my 850 back from the dealer today. They ended up replacing the fan, fan motor, fan shroud, and upgraded the 10 amp relay to a 20 amp. hopefully this will fix the overheating issue. while in the shop they also replaced the front diff because when test riding they noticed a problem with the adc. Overall since i have had the bike "i bought new on july 12, 2013" They have replaced 2 front axles 1 front diff 3 fan relays 1 fan and 1 fan shroud. this thing is still stock i am really worried about putting a lift and 30" backs on it the whole bike might fall apart. Dont get me wrong i love polaris. My family has had them all my life, but with this machine its hard not to start getting some bad feelings for them.
Hey guys, sorry to reopen this but I'm confused. I have a 2013 850 xp that overheated this wknd the fan would barley come on; I hear the circuit breaker clicking and the fan tries coming on but doesn't. I have relocated the circuit breaker put a new one w/ring terminals and does the same. I have tried switching around the relays and test them to see if power gets through and nothing. For the mean time I have installed a by pass switch and the fan kicks on at full power so I don't think the fan is the culprit. Any ideas guys
K's Motorsports are the people who fixed mine it was under warranty. they ended up changing all the 10a hardware " relays circuit breaker and fuses" to 20a. i would start by trying this and see if it works.
I wish I would have bought the warranty now; I had bought mine used and didn't buy it cause they wanted a grand for it. Anything else that I might be over looking? Besides having to take it to the dealer and pay them with my right leg
It was working fine but after I pulled a atv and a SxS and a couple mud holes it began doing that, I looked for a clogged radiator and it wasn't clogged
