I've read numerous threads and there seems to be a lot of different opinions on cams. My 1999 Sportsman 500 is having exhaust cam lobe symptoms so I'm probably going to need a replacement. Anyways my question is can you or who of you is running just the cam and not the 500 HO carb? Also, I read that some guy didn't need to redo any jetting or anything. And last question..if I don't decide to go with the HO cam, I'm assuming the new part number 3086212 would be fixed so this problem won't happen again. Thanks a lot.

I always just use stock cam. The ho camshaft is bigger and I think it will require larger jets. This problem is cused by not changing the oil at proper intervals. Improper oil and gas getting into the oil are other causes.
Always check the oil to make sure gas hasn't entered the crankcase. I always use 0W-40 fully synthetic oil(Polaris or Mobil 1). If the float in the carb sticks it will flood and dump raw fuel into the crankcase.
Maybe this info will be somewhat helpfull.
