Anybody in the northern California area? I have a 07 sporty 800 and I need to try swapping the cdi with a known good one. I'm tired of throwing money at mine trying to get it to run right. Already replaced a bunch of other crap. Don't wanna buy a $400 cdi if it's not that.

I'm from California but living in Alabama right now. My family used to ride a lot at Prairie City OFP just outside of Sacramento to the east. Outside of Tahoe are some awesome rides but some are on pretty narrow and steep. Easy enough getting a map from the US Foresty service for just a couple of bucks. The best "lonesome" riding is just outside of Tahoe toward Carson City NV where there are literally hundreds of thousands of acres of BLM land you can go on. If you live in the Inland Empire area then of course there is a lot or riding past Angelus Oaks toward Big Bear (1N trails) and past Big Bear toward the High Desert is the old Silver Trail area which is tens of thousands of acres large. Toward Palm Springs there is a lot of riding and if you have a little more time you can go north to Las Vegas and do BLM riding or toward Park Moabi and again do BLM riding.

Gotta make a change

Hey folks,

I live in the Santa Cruz mountains and ride a Sportsman 500. I've had it for a few years now, and go riding with my 17 year old. He has been on a dirtbike since he was about 11. About the only place around here that's worth driving to is Hollister Hills.

You would think that living in the mountains here would make for riding opportunities, but all the land is either private or off-limits to ATVs.

My problem is that my son is now sworn off the dirtbike. He took a bad fall on it a couple of months ago, riding around the neighborhood. I have been telling him for years that I did not want him riding on pavement, but getting a teenage boy to listen is problematic. The good news is that he sustained no long term injuries, but suffered a lot of road rash and bruises. The other news, however, is that he sustained a concussion - he has had one or two of these before. You can only take so many concussions before long term issues appear, and he has his whole life still ahead. So now he wants to get into 4 wheeling as a safer alternative. We already have a Jeep Cherokee, and Hollister has a 4wd area that is separate from the dirt bike/ATV area.

So now I don't have my riding partner. I can either go to Hollister and ride by myself, or consider selling the ATV and getting a side-by-side. I can ride the side-by-side in the 4wd area while he wheels the Jeep. I really love my ATV, and stepping up to an SxS is not going to be cheap. But maybe it is the only way he and I can "ride" together. It's rare to see anybody at Hollister on a utility ATV, so I don't know if any of you go there.

I am kinda stuck on the fence as to what I want to do, so any ideas or thoughts are welcome.

Find him a used ATV, get a trailer for the two, and tow with the Cherokee. You get to keep yours, and you get to ride together with Quads and/or the jeep. Think camping trips to the mountains.
He probably left you in the dust on the bike anyways. With a Quad, not so much. But you can still get yourself hurt riding one.

SxS are cool, but they're limited in where you can go, for ex. vehicle width limitations on trails. Good SxS places would be Fire roads only(check maps for their local restrictions), dunes, BLM land, and the 4x4 area.

Haven't made the drive to Hollister yet. I hear it's good. Carnegie is the closest for me to get it out of my system while the Sierras are closed for the winter.
