When my son and I go riding in PA we sometimes stay overnight at a local motel to ride both days and I am ALWAYS worried that a would be thief eyes up to Polaris ATVs on a trailer in a parking lot - I run a heavy chain through the frame of both machines and it is padlocked to the trailer in both sides - I then also chain the 2 quads together . I obviously remove with keys and the trailer is locked to the truck as well as a locked pin through the receiver hitch . I also only go to chain hotels that have security cameras and park in a well lit area

The sad part is nothing will stop a real thief if they want your stuff ... But if you make it hard for them they may just move on

Unfortunately you can put on all the locks, chains and cables you want. The thieves have these:

I know it can be easily cut but around here we mostly have opportunity thieves. they dont carry tools if they can easily get it they will. Mines also locked in a garage with a 100w flood light that lights up the whole yard all night.

A thief would need to first learn my garage code, then gain access to the house itself through the door from the garage, know and punch in the code to shut off the house alarm, find one of two sets of car keys, then find the key to the quad which is in an obscure location, pull out either my wife's car or mine as they block the quad in, then move the garbage cans, fire up the quad and roll out. All before he/she's pinned by one of numerous guns I have strategically placed in my home.

Those locks prevent a revolver from being loaded and fired. It still can be stolen. Those lock are for young children living in the house.

IF they move the truck, OPEN the garage, FIND the ATV key, DRIVE it over the 2 foot steel rails and the tongue of the trailer without me hearing it? They can have it, well done sir!

Yes I lock the trailer receiver and remove the chains. Im as worried about my trailer growing legs as am the polaris. Those are 2 things that will never be found again.

No way in hell id leave it outside. I understand not everyone has a garage but not having storage for a wheeler is a big decision in the buying process for me.

You can reduce your risk and make your ATV a poor target for theft.
The threat wants to be in the dark, quiet, and quick, so don’t provide them with dark, quiet, and quick.
Security measures are applied in depth, several layers of security.
Using several simple, low cost practices can help you keep your ATV.

Deter: Front and rear porch lights on at night.
Deter: Keep the ATV in the back yard.
Deter: Cover the ATV with a brown tarp so it is not apparent.
Deter: Keep the ATV in your garage or shed.
Deter: Motion sensor flood lights on house or shed.

Delay: Use a pad lock that fits in the brake disk holes.
Delay: Keep the keys in a room separate from the ATV.
Delay: Loop a wire rope through the rim holes and through the frame and lock

it with a heavy duty pad lock.
Delay: Put stuff around the ATV that would have to be moved and would make noise.
Delay: When you go on vacation, remove a wheel and the seat and put them in your basement or in a closet.

You do not have to do all of these, but you should try to do as many as possible as a regular practice.
There are other things you can do to deter and delay.
All of these items can be defeated.
But you have created a situation where the threat should move on to easier pickings.

ATV Anti-Theft: Hide it, immobilize it, don't make it an easy target.

Also,
take good pictures of it that you can email/print out for law enforcement,
record the ATV VIN and keep it in your desk file folder, and
consider marking the underside of a plastic part with the last four digits of your SSN or your initials.
