ATV Anti-Theft

You can reduce your risk and make your ATV a poor target for theft.
The threat wants to be in the dark, quiet, and quick, so don’t provide them with dark, quiet, and quick.
Security measures are applied in depth, several layers of security.
Using several simple, low cost practices can help you keep your ATV.

Deter: Front and rear porch lights on at night.
Deter: Keep the ATV in the back yard.
Deter: Cover the ATV with a brown tarp so it is not apparent.
Deter: Keep the ATV in your garage or shed.
Deter: Motion sensor flood lights on house or shed.

Delay: Use a pad lock that fits in the brake disk holes.
Delay: Keep the keys in a room separate from the ATV.
Delay: Loop a wire rope through the rim holes and through the frame and lock it with a heavy duty pad lock.
Delay: Put stuff around the ATV that would have to be moved and would make noise.
Delay: When you go on vacation, remove a wheel and the seat and put them in your basement or in a closet.

You do not have to do all of these, but you should try to do as many as possible as a regular practice.
There are other things you can do to deter and delay.
All of these items can be defeated.
But you have created a situation where the threat should move on to easier pickings.

ATV Anti-Theft: Hide it, immobilize it, don't make it an easy target.

Also,
take good pictures of it that you can email/print out for law enforcement,
record the ATV VIN and keep it in your desk file folder, and
consider marking the underside of a plastic part with the last four digits of your SSN or your initials.

NICE Rotty !!!!! I had a 160 lbs German male and a 95 lbs American female until they died. I love Rottys !!!!!!!

Anyway, I keep our machines in the garage, in the back yard, with a security system. In addition, each bike has a disk lock on it while in the garage. And my truck stays parked in front of the gate. IF they can get the bikes around all that, I'll be waiting at the end of the driveway with some friends from either Austria or Switzerland.

Thanks man! He was Riley and about 140# in that pic. I'm sorry to say he is not here anylonger, but waiting for me at a yet to be determined date...

Roger the foreign friends, One of mine from Austria is here now, on my right hip, as we speak. He keeps 13 of his little buddies ready to go... ;)

Yep. Probably just pushed them away. Or maybe the keys were hanging on the peg board. If they had disk brake locks and a few other things, they would still be there. No locked garage in "Lockport" NY.

SAINT JOHN (Canada) - When it comes to protecting an all-terrain vehicle from theft, removing the key is not enough, police say. "You really have to take steps to protect your investment," [Officer] Copeland said. Owners should hide the vehicles in garages and lock them with chains. One of the thefts happened in broad daylight when a racing ATV was left parked in a driveway near the Saint John Marina on July 17. The Honda TRX 400 EX could be worth up to $10,000 with all the "bling" and engine upgrades, Copeland said. While ATV thefts tend to increase in the summer months - when the vehicles are left outside - the crimes are difficult to track because of the remote nature of the sport. "There's far less in the way of licensing and road rules for police to be involved in checking ATVs," Copeland said. "They're operated outside the laws, basically. We don't have access to where the ATVs are." Since most riding takes place on trails deep in the woods outside the city, drivers don't have to worry about registration, insurance and the possibility of being checked by police, he said. "So it really makes the recovery of ATVs much more difficult." On top of that, not all ATV parts are labelled with a serial number, unlike cars and trucks. So if a thief steals a vehicle with the intent of stripping it for parts, it's much more difficult for police to track them down. The thievery creates a black market for parts, he said. "There's a very lucrative, booming black market for ATVs and parts," Copeland said. Most of the ATV thieves are avid riders themselves, Copeland said, so they know how to strip the vehicles. He says removing the key is not enough, because it's easy to quietly roll away an ATV without anyone noticing. Owners should disable the machine, hide it in a garage, and chain up the vehicle.

o.k if your machine has efi, than i would install and have installed(for a friend)a car security system with motion sensor and remote,i also installed a remote start system on the same machine(2004 sportsman 700 efi).also polaris has a electronic security system with a number pad that you enter a 4 digit code that electronicly locks the machine, but it is only for the snowmachines.i have this on my 2004 pro-xr 800 snowmachine.but the car system works fine for efi 4-wheelers.
Just an observation...it would be much easier to quietly "roll" a sport bike away than an 800+ pound Sportsman. Not impossible for a couple of big guys though. In our area, it would be very dangerous to try to steal an ATV, Castle Law or not!
My 2001 Sportsman was locked up with a large chain and lock. The lock was cut.
So, What I know now is make sure it makes noise if they cut the lock. I'm getting an auto alarm on my next one.

excellent idea!!!

Find It Now makes a good tracking system for powersports. If I didn't keep mine in a locked garage I would install one.

mines in the garage under security, if outside it's wraped in a cable and if that cable is unpluged to unwrap from the bike or cut, the house alarm goes off.
I have insurance. If they really want it they are going to get it. I do lock it to my trailer and the trailer has a tongue lock on it. I also have a battery cut off in the airbox.
I had just installed an alarm system for my atv. I hidden the brain and all the wires so it cant be cut, and added a backup battery just in case. Its sensitive enough that it can sense a tap on the fender and switches being turned on or off. Although the atv stays inside the garage with an inhouse alarm system and surveillance, it kinda nice to have it installed just for that added protection.

I would rather have the thief :pokey: than having :AR15firing: and :chairshot:

For those who trust in the dog defense: Take a look

I have 3 dogs in the house. A very large and important folder, money, computer files. Stolen! Not to mention a sonicwall firewall having firmware altered. That's direct connect in person only thing. :susel:

The deterrents only keep dumb or honest folks out.

Best option a chain to thick for bolt cutters and a master lock combination commercial grade lock. If it takes a key it can be "bumped" open in seconds. To think to cut = takes to long. And find a spot that can not be unbolted to remove the chain, & a anchor point hard to remove. It boils down to the weakest link needs to take to long and to much effort. Thieves generally are lazy. :fragez:

according to the reviews it doesn't work
In all honesty, try to keep your padlock in an area that is really hard to get at also. I am a gas well tender in PA and we have many gates to our locations that are shared with several other companies and/or land owners. Ive been locked out of these gates countless times and ive busted every padlock off by twisting it up with a 24" pipewrench. you just keep ballin it up in the chain till she gets tight then give er a good push and it literally shatters. combo lock or key lock it doesnt matter. keep this in mind when ya use a padlock. IT is the weakest link. Hide that sucker in tight to the machine.
i like alot of these ideas especially the dogs what i keep telling my parents we need! i always keep the quad key in my locked truck and the spare is on me at all times also i keep it locked in a garage with two seperate locks one on the inside on the door to get the quad out and one on the man door
Wow after reading this guess I never thought of any of this. But then again if a thief wants something he will get it, he will put alot of work into it just like we did buying our toys. They also do not care if they damage the vehicle after all its not theirs. Besides all locks chains and the like are all metals and they melt.
Main Point if they want it they will get it.
