So I was trying to put more gas in the fuel tank of my parents atv to use it. I used a fuel container to put the gas in. But I didn’t realize that my dad had placed that empty fuel container by the shed and it had gotten water in it from the rain. So I had assumed there was gas in it, not water. Well we tried to go down the road and it completely stalled. We pushed it back and my dad had to vacuum out the water from the tank and fuel lines. Well he revved it up to see if the engine would run, and it picked up. He revved it a bunch for a while to see if it was good. It was working well and didn’t stall or anything. Well I decided to use it since it was all set. But then as I was heading down the road, it stalled and wouldn’t start. I had to turn it off and start it again. As I was going back home, it couldn’t even go above 10mph. So I’m really wondering what’s wrong with it. I don’t want my parents to kill me. Please help!

They make an additive you can put in the tank that will essentially "bind" the water. Add it, shake the machine well, then DRAIN it fully. Use that gas gradually in a car or truck. Then add more of the water dispersent and ALCOHOL FREE gas (just a few gallons), and run it through until the tank is about empty, repeat and then you should be okay. Dad kinda takes some of the blame here for putting the tank away in a manner that would allow it to get water in it.....

There are no additives that can efficiently remove water from gas. HEET is alcohol, alcohol will absorb water and the alcohol/water mix can be burned in small quantities in larger engines. Most pump gas is already 10% alcohol - a 12oz bottle of HEET treats 20 gallon of gasoline - if you add 12oz of alcohol to gas that is 10% alcohol, you no have a 10.4% alcohol blend. In essence HEET is absolutely useless when added to alcohol blended fuel.

The only way to expel water from the fuel system is to drain the fuel tank and dry it using an absorbent or air to evaporate the remaining water and fuel. You can dilute water with a large quantity of alcohol (isopropyl, ethanol, denatured, methanol) then drain the water contaminated alcohol from the fuel system (including draining the carburetor float bowl), allow to dry and fill with non-ethanol gasoline and it should run fine again. NOTE: you may have to install a new spark plug to restore performance.
