You sir are correct!

If water leaked in, fluid would leak out.
Ice may have broken a wire going to the hub, check that first.
Broken wire now soldered and shrinkwrapped.

Back in the game.

Fluid looked fine but I'll service that when it gets warmer.
-6F today and dropping next week here in Wisconsin.

Thank you guys!

The seal sleeve (I think the book calls it the outer pole) is fine. Its just back way too far. About .002-.003 too far. The part I'm concerned about is the( inner pole) the fixed part that is part of the hub strut. Its dented and the armature plate doesn't sit even. Just wondering if it can be repaired or I found a used strut hub for around$50. Do I need to get that.
If it's still available, get it. Three debts one is toast.

No, I think the clutch parts also space the bearings out keeping the center ones in the right place. You could take the clutch apart and just keep the center part in there. Then you just need to keep the fluid lever correct or you will burn up the bearings. Switch wouldn't make a difference since there isn't anything inside the hub to engage.
