Hello! I am new here and somewhat new to the atv world. Here is my question...

I have a 2009 sportsman 500. Last week I went riding all day at an atv park. Hit some mud, rocks and open trails. No problems! Trailered it home and left on the trailer all night. When taking it off the trailer I began to notice a clicking sound from the rear end. Tore it apart to find the cv boot torn.

Here is the question. My buddies want to go back next weekend for a day of riding. I can afford a boot replacement but not the joint replacement. I don't work in the summer so I could replace the joint in the fall.

My father in law says to remove the joint and clean it real well, re grease, then re boot it and go till it breaks. But I am not sure.

If I bandaid it, how long could it last if I go easy?

Thanks

I don't know the true answer here, but I can tell you that I ride with plenty of guys who've torn boots and never replaced the CV. I guess it depends on how bad it looks.

I'd do like you F-I-L says. What's the worst that can happen you have to replace the cv which you plan on doing eventually anyway? Just work in slow after you fix the boot and see how it feels/sounds. I am not a mechanic, just a guy who understands your dilemma and hopefully someone knowledgeble will reply. Bring a tow strap with you

ABSOLUTELY!!

remember the boot is ONLY there to hold the grease in and debris out!! Once torn, the joint can break down form no grease and foreign matter....

Do exactly as your "dad" advises! As long as nothing else is found, you will be just fine.

BTW this is NOT a bandaid. A bandade would be something like duct tape to hold grease in....

Ok thanks! I am attempting to take the axel then cv off today. I have watched many videos and checked the web for photos. Anyone want to offer any advice for the job? Cv man says that the inner just pulls out. They also say the outer is hard to do but it looks like you just put it into a vice and whack it with a hammer. Is it that easy?

To put it back on do I just put it back into the vice and just pound it back on?

There is a lot on the net about how to take it apart but not much on how to put it back together.

Thanks
