Brake lever goes soft after water. Comes back when pumped

Brakes work fine until I go through water/mud. First time you grab brake lever after water/mud the lever goes right to handle bar and no brakes at all. Pump the lever once or twice and the brakes come back. Changed brake pads still does same thing.

Any ideas?

I'd guess water actually has nothing to do with it.
You might have a bad bearing or other component that is pushing the caliper piston into the caliper.
First grab of the lever is soft because its just taking up the slack.

Just a WAG

How do they work without any water/mud involved?
May be that the adjustment screws are set incorrectly, air in the system, water in the brake fluid or organic pads rather than metallic pads?
Will try bleeding brakes. The machine did it yesterday after sitting in garage for a month or 2. So no water necessary now. Scary when you are flying into a turn and need to grab the brakes and nothing happens! Ha
