The cast levers for my sons sportsman 90 broke, I'm trying to install the rear brake lever first, but seems there is not enough movement in the cable to attach to the new lever, I know there must be something I'm doing wrong, any help will be much appreciated, thanks.

Put the cable's end into the lever before you insert the lever into it's perch. You also may have to loosen up any cable adjust nut ( at either end ) first.

I'm having trouble getting enough slack in the cable, I losend the nut near the back shoes, don't see one for the front, where it goes into the lever.

Yea but did you try this part...(you may have to move the lever around or upside down) then...

Put the cable's end into the lever BEFORE you insert the lever into it's handlebar perch.
If so maybe pull on the end of the cable with visegrips to try and get more slack, it maybe rusted/froze up. cable lube tools help free stuck cables.

The brake arm at the drum may be out of position and need manipulated.
