Can't shift with the motor on

I have a 1995 425 Magnum that I picked up off craigslist. I had to clean the carb and replace the starter motor and bendix and it was running again. But now I can't shift gears when the motor is running. The shifting feels ok when the motor is off, but after you turn it on it feels like something will break before it will shift.

Any ideas?

is it idling high? if the idle is to high it will not shift.

Clutch(s) Maybe need cleaning - likely the primary is not opening and is turning the belt and secondary.
If you put it in gear and start it, does it want to move; even at idle?

Jordaman17 - It doesn't sound really high, but I am not sure how to measure it exactly.
Phil - Yes it wants to creep along at idle.

If you have the idle down and it's still creeping - need to have a look at the clutch. Maybe just dirty and dragging.
