I have the 04 600 and had a similar problem, after drilling out mixture screw brass plug and new main jet then raising the clip on the needle twice I found a split in the rubber intake boot, common problem apparently.
Could be a split in one of the carb boots, or a partially plugged pilot jet in the carb. Time to remove the carb, give it a good cleaning, and inspect the boots.
I cleaned carb. and with it off i checked boot but did not remove it i guess thats what i will do to it, remove boot and check it really good.... Thanks
Did you drill out the brass plug and remove the mixture screw when you cleaned it? Could be a chunk of crud stuck in there that won't come through without pulling that screw out.
