Helping a buddy, he bought a 2003 trail boss and this Mitsubishi CDI box electrical component was bad when he purchased it notice the burn hole in the back.
We replaced the part, clean the carburetor had it running about 10 minutes and it started to smoke, at the exact same area on the replacement electrical component. Any ideas what may cause this???
Thx guys.

My first suspicion would be high voltage on the brown wire with the red stripe - it plugs into a red wire with a white stripe - the red/wht wire is hot when the key is on - if the rec/reg has failed it could have upwards of 30 volts DC when the engine is running - get another CDI box so it will run again, start it and check the voltage on the red/wht wire as the engine is accelerated slowly - if the voltage goes above 16, shut it down and replace the rec/reg.
