Hi, I have acquired a project atv. It's a 350L. It's no way near in shape for long ride, but I want to get it going to work around the house.

After its ride home on my trailer, something is messed up with the steering. I can turn to the right, yet if I try to center the handle, it blocks at about 15-20 degrees before reaching the center position. So basically if it was running, I'd be stuck going in circles.

Is there common known direction issues or suggestions to what I should be looking at ? My priority was to get the engine going before working on any of the "exterior" issues, but this is quite annoying as it prevents me from moving it around the garage easily.

Thanks

Simon

I applaud your desire with the older machine! Before you start fixing anything, I would give it a good going over and find out everything that it's gonna need first. Make a list and estimate the costs. Then prioritize the repairs. You don't say what year or model you have. Some of the older machines can be hard to find parts for. Be prepared to look for used when you can. Ebay and powersportsnation.com are a couple of resources. There is definitely something wrong in the steering. Jack up the front and start taking things off until you find the problem. I use snowmobile skates to support the machine and roll it around the shop. They also get it up off the ground a bit.

Model is actually a Polaris W928139 (1992) Trail Boss 350L

It seems like most mechanical parts are still available. At least what I've looked at.

Seller was asking for 550CND. I got him down to 260. Which I believe I could recup by parting it out if needed.

He said it was running 2 years ago and haven't spent time on it since then.

Obvious things missing is the rear sprocket and cover near the foot stand which is needed to drive the rear axle. Including the chain. The other rear chain is clearly also in a rough shape.

Not sure if the starter still works as I have yet to connect a battery. Nor have I even added or checked any of the fluids.

If I can get the direction issue figured out (hoping it's something simple). And get it started and driving with the front axle, then my plan was at the very minimum get the rear axle back in action and go from there fixing what shows up as I go and learn about this machine.

Got a head start now that I have the service manual NM which will clearly help.

Good idea for the skates platforms.

Thanks

If the steering won't move through the full range of travel, you'll have to jack the front end up and see where its binding... tie rods, ball joints, steering bushings, etc. Or it could be nothing more than a cable catching on something preventing movement.
