05 is old enough the baffles in the exhaust could be rusting out reducing the back pressure and causing the popping - it doesn't hurt anything, it's just annoying - you might try turning the pilot screw on the carb out 1/2 turn or raise the idle RPM a bit - it will only pop when the throttle is fully closed.
Exhaust Popping
Hello I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO. On the last couple of rides I noticed an occasional "popping" sound coming from the exhaust when cruising at a slower speed. Any advice on how to troubleshoot and correct the issue would be much appreciated?

Thanks, It currently pops at low speed .....say 10 mph. Thanks, Ken
If it only pops at low speed in low gear; try servicing the air filter or check the carb slide needle and needle jet for wear - if it pops at low speed in high, try a new spark plug.
