I just purchased a great previously owned 2009 Sportsman 500 HO for ice fishing, hunting, etc. This is my first ATV.

I would like to mount a gun/auger mount to the front storage lid. It appears to be a stock lid that has two steel rails that run the width of the lid. Each rail has semi circle indents that appear to allow accessories to be slipped in and anchored down.

Can someone confirm/deny that these two steel rails are for mounting accessories to the lid. If so, where do I find the mounting bracket for the accessories. More importantly, what is the standard name of the mounting bracket so I can do internet search as I can't find anything.

I have purchased what appears to be a universal gun mount that would require me to drill into the lid which I prefer not to do. With the plastic webing on the underside of the lid, the mounting of this backet would be difficult due to the size of the supplied steel bracket.

Thanks in advance for your help

Blueline15...thanks.

Just to confirm (before I drill) the steel rails are only for tie downs. Like fishing boats and other rec vehicles, manufactures make a lot of $$ off of designing products with accessory rails then selling the accessories that attach. Not sure why Polaris wouldn't do this.

I've attached a pic just to confirm your response...thanks for all of your help...J

That's correct. I've never seen anything that slides into that rail system to attach to the box. And I've stood behind the parts counter for 3 years.

If you're installing the OEM rack extender rails I don't think you have to drill on the back, and on the front box if you open the lid you will see exactly where to out the drill bit when you read the directions.

If you add a rack extension, you clamp your brackets to the extension rail. I have a dual gun mount and my rear view mirror on mine.
