You don't say what machine you have but sounds like you have a float needle valve or seat leaking. Pretty common issue. You should always turn the fuel shutoff valve to the side/"off" position anytime the machine will be sitting a while. On some carbs the needle seat has an o ring under it that deteriorates causing the leak. Other times its the needle valve itself allowing fuel to leak past it because of dirt, gum or deterioration.
