I have a 2004 Sportsman 500. This is an automatic. At times, I have a real problem shifting it into gear. I know to step on the foot brake when I shift. Still it can be very hard to shift at times. Rocking the machine can help but not always.

Does anyone have an idea on how I can cure this? Trans fluid was just replaced and it has had no real effect on this.

Help!

Thanks......

have you tried adjusting your selector linkage?
that would have nothing to do with the stiffness he has, if it's easy to shift through gears with the engine turned off, it's a belt alleginment issue. alleign the belt, but like I said you may of also seperated an engine mount. check those too.

What RPM is your machine idling at? High RPM will cause this symptom.

Problem solved. It was a worn drive belt. Replaced belt, problem solved.

I had problems shifting like you described after I took the engine out of my 03 500, this info is very helpful, I have a high idle, possible loose mount, and maybe screwed up spacer/shim. At least I know where to look. thank's
