Hi everyone, just bought my first Polaris atv, a very mistreated 1994 Polaris 400 4x4 2 stroke that I'm looking forward to restoring. It does run, needs a new belt, and cosmetic TLC, but I couldn't say no to bringing it home for the price I paid. Since it needs a new belt, what is the general consensus about OEM Polaris belts or aftermarket?
Thanks to everyone in advance.

Polaris don't make belts - they sell belts with their name on them and perhaps made to their specifications. A lot of people use Gates - I like EPI.

First if you are new here, we most certainly welcome you! If you are a lurker right now, (and there are a lot of you lurkers out there) dont be shy, sign up!

I thought i would post this thread to help new people who do not know any members and might have a question, to help who the best person on this forum might be to personally address the question, or bring their attention to a certain thread.

feel free to post a thread about any problems you might have, as we all learn from those. but this thread will hopefully give you an idea who to ask for help from.

existing members, if you have any speciality skills that you wouldn't mind sharing and helping new people with, post those up here!

i'll start....

I have a few years of polaris parts experience and sales experience too. I also have special access to the dealer site. Most of my knowledge is on the newer machines. I can help with parts and sells with all models polaris (atv's, sideXsides, snowmobiles, and watercraft) i have installed almost every accessory in the polaris book at one time or another. i have also done a lot of "little" service shop stuff, but nothing major. but being behind the parts counter, i felt like a service guy a lot of the time.

if you have any questions that releate to:
-sales purchasing
-rebate help
-sales fees/discounts
-VIN# runs for possible recalls
-Accessory install help
-Part # help/cost
-Find a part #
-What parts fit what years and models
-Maintenance Questions
-General Service Questions

if you have a question even close to any of these topics, please feel free to PM me at any time. I will do my best to help you out, or point you in the right direction.

who else has special skills that they can offer help on?

NOOB here.. My 2007 Sportsman 500 was smoking like crazy at the exhaust 'manifold' this morning when my son started it to dig out from last night's snow...looks like there is oil leaking out near the base of the manifold (perhaps among other locations nearby) with oil drips hanging from the bolts. Checked the oil reservoir which seemed more full than it should have been (oil change last spring) and smelled of gas. While running at idle the engine block seemed to heat up very rapidly. Any help or suggestions on where to start on this one are appreciated.

With some further looking, the oil present at the exhaust outlet may have been somewhat limited (it burned-off) while a bunch of smoke continues from the bell shaped connection to the the rest of the exhaust system. Does this suggest that I have a bunch of oil sitting in the low point of the exhaust pipe? It does not seem like the smoke should be able to escape there...better seal?...but there is no oil on the exterior of the pipe. I have attached a couple of pictures. The first is before the exhaust pipe oil burned-off. The second is the bell joint I referred to above.

Any assistance is appreciated.

It appears to me the head cover is leaking and oil is running down onto the head pipe adapter - the bell portion is a flexible metal on metal connection as the engine is rubber mounted a little smoke from the joint is acceptable.

2004 A04CH42AQ SPORTSMAN 400 (A04CH42AQ/AR/AS/AT/AV) - Crankcase
2005 SPORTSMAN 400 (A05MH42AB) - Crankcase
2010 RANGER 4X4 400 HO (R10RH45AG/AH/AR) - Engine, Crankcase
2011 HAWKEYE 400 HO 2X4 (A11MB46FZ) - Engine, Crankcase
2011 RANGER 400 HO (R11RH45AG/AH/AR) - Engine, Crankcase
2011 SPORTSMAN 400 HO 4X4 (A11MH46AX/AZ) - Engine, Crankcase
2012 HAWKEYE 400 HO 2X4 (A12MB46FZ) - Engine, Crankcase
2012 RANGER 400 4X4 (R12RH45AG/AH/AR) - Engine, Crankcase
