It's just in front of the left foot well on the side of the frame rail.

The 10th digit of the VIN is the year.

 

ok just got back from cleaning the frame looking for the number, couldn't find anything in front of the left foot area

 

but i did come across this 17 digit number under the seat stamped on the crossbar, but I'm not sure if its the VIN because the 10 digit is a letter

and theres also no 97 or 98 or 99 in the number

 

well thats weird I just got off the phone with my local polaris dealer and he was telling me the number be down in front of my left foot on the frame also, so I told him I couldn't find anything there but I did find a 17 digit code under the seat, and he asked if it started with a 4X and it does, and he said the 10th letter being a V would make it a 1997, and he said that would be my VIN number

Yep, if it's a 17 digit that's the VIN. That's a new one on me with it being under the seat. I'll have to remember that. They're usually where I directed you on most machines. Honda's are on the front.
