Is it true? And is it really that simple…

3136 Views 22 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  latebird
I heard on a YouTube video of a 500 engine rebuild guide that if you take a H.O cam and H.O carb you can turn a 500 non H.O into an H.O, question is …is it really that simple? Other then valve adjustment I’m assuming possibly a air intake mod or airbox swap.
And what about exhaust? Would that need changing or would stock work if this is possible? Also I would think you’d need a hi flo oil pump?
idk I’m new to atv engines and just curious as I have my 500 torn apart atm.
any input is appreciated, thx

It's easier than that - all you have to do is change the stickers

I just looked up the cam, carb, exhaust and air box for the 04 500 and 05 500 HO - they use the same parts

500 H.O came out in 01

The exhaust is the same, just the cam and carb are different AFAIK
OK - the 01 had a different carb and mid pipe on the exhaust - the rest of the parts were the same
The standard used a BST34 carb and the HO had a BST40 carb - by 2005 they all had the same carb
So literally just swap cam/carb , maybe a little valve adjustment and then my bike would be h.o? Lmao! Seriously good to know thanks for looking it up and confirming. I’ll be swapping those two parts for h.o for my rebuild.

Cam was "updated" to to fix the wear issues of the non H.O

Just swap the carb? The 2009 already has a BST40 carb on it - the difference is the 09 uses carb 3131567 while the 01 uses carb 3131453

Valve adjustment - that is routine maintenance and is the same for the 01 and the 09 and more
I heard on a YouTube video of a 500 engine rebuild guide that if you take a H.O cam and H.O carb you can turn a 500 non H.O into an H.O, question is …is it really that simple? Other then valve adjustment I’m assuming possibly a air intake mod or airbox swap.
And what about exhaust? Would that need changing or would stock work if this is possible? Also I would think you’d need a hi flo oil pump?
idk I’m new to atv engines and just curious as I have my 500 torn apart atm.
any input is appreciated, thx
If it's on you tube it must be true - did you know that turning tires inside out will give you better traction on asphalt and make the tread last forever? I saw it on boob tube so I know it's true and I need to get one of the machines that turns tires inside out.

Where do you get a Hi Flo oil pump? I can't find it as a performance item on any website.
So the scrambler got the better cam before the sportsman
So the scrambler got the better cam before the sportsman
It's the same cam in the Scrambler - it's the same engine

No I don’t belive everything I see online wich is why I was asking here.

If it's more performance you're looking for why not simply purchase a larger displacement ATV?

Isn’t HO fuel injected.
Some were after 05 (i think). I think you could get carb or EFI untill they were discontinued in 13

I see I have an 06 HO and it’s fuel injected.
In 06 you had a choice of 500 HO with carb or not HO with EFI
In 07 all Sportsman 500's were EFI
In 08 there was 500 HO with carb and 500 HO with EFI
