Leak from front gearcase k-input cover crack

2017 Sportsman 850 SP had a leak under front gearcase. Found k-input cover had crack around lower right bolt. Rest of it broke while banging the roller pin out.
Question: What could cause damage in this relatively protected area? Is it part quality issue?

Yep, A lot of pre-18 owners upgrade to HD billet pinion covers from Gecco or elsewhere when the machine is new to prevent it from exploding and trashing the gearcase. Several discussions on here about it. I certainly wouldn't put another weak OEM cover back on it if I already had to take it apart to replace the original weak OEM cover that failed!!

Thanks! They sold out :-( . And OEM already arrived. Maybe next time. Can this cover be swapped without taking gearcase out?

Yes you should be able to install the cover with the case in. You'll have to loosen things up to get the cover to clear.
