Would i be ok to use mobil 5w-50 in my next oil change for a 2012 sportsman 800? - and has anybody ever had issues with using fram filters instead of the polaris filters?

Thanks

the 5-50 is ok to use..most here use either the puralator or wix filters....fram just came out with a new filter its called the Ultra Synthetic...the buzz on the oil forums say it a great filter...better than most out now...but the cheaper ones I would pass on...I was at the auto store and they do have the Ultra thats fits polaris...but I have a few filters now to use up..but I will try one ...has great reviews
Oil is fine,.......as far as Fram, they are she worst filter available. Purolator or Wix is my choice
What is the filter number for the WIX?

There's nothing wrong with Fram (The orange cans) except that there are better filters out there for the money, and quite honestly the Fram Ultra is one of the best built filters currently on the market.

Right now, Purolator is probably the worst filter out there. Go to BITOG and check out all the Purolators showing up with torn media. They used to make a great product, but somehow their quality control has gone down the drain.

Here's a recently posted thread that shows both a Purolator and a Fram. The Purolator has failed miserably, and the Fram looks great. The Fram in this thread is a PH6017A, which is the filter that Fram specs for Polaris engines.

Fram i believe was bought out by champion labs....so i think quality has increased....and true the last time I was on bob's site the plain puralators were getting a bad rap due to the filter media tearing inside...the pure ones were still good.....but as said the new Fram Ultra is top dog now....
I bought the Fram Ultra and it sucks. Unknowingly, all my Fram filters were impeding oil flow as I had always used them. Switch to a Bosch filter and my Oil pressure in my truck went up 15-20 psi. Thought something was wrong so I bought a Napa Gold.....same thing....15-20 PSI more oil pressure.

Took the Fram Ultra apart and it looked cheap compared to a simple paper filter ones. Fram is the best marketer but their quality is sub par IMHO and experience. Wix or NapaGold in my stable..

I don't see how that's physically possible. The Fram Ultra and other synthetic media filters, like the Royal Purple filters I'm currently using, are significantly less restrictive than traditional paper filters.

I also don't understand how you think that a wire mesh backed synthetic media looks "cheap" compared to a standard paper filter.

Fram has made huge leaps with their filters. Their new ultra istop notch.

Filtering and flow is all about surface area. How much surface area is in that ultra filter compared to a pleated paper filter? Not much! That Fram looks like a ruffle tater chip. I would say a typical paper pleated filter has 10 times the filter surface as that Fram ultra, probably more!

I was sold on Fram for years but I'm no longer impressed with the fancy packaging or commercials after seeing first hand how they impeded flow.

Synthetic media filters work differently than a regular paper filter. They don't have as much surface area, but the media is much thicker. This is because synthetic media traps particles within the media, rather than on the surface like paper media. This is how they achieve lower restriction while still having high efficiency and can hold far more contaminants than a regular paper filter.

Good topic.

I just recently had to change my oil/filter numerous times and all I had/have access to is FRAM EXTRAGUARD PH6017A. There at Canadian Tire for $9.99. I hope its a good filter because that's the only option right meow.

skizmo..... Fram is your only option? Someone should have the Mobil M1-108 or M1-110 filters or other brands. I use to use the M1-110 on my '07 500 X2, now on the '12 850 Touring I use the shorter M1-108..... both are good filters.
Not up here, you take what you get locally. Who wants to drive an hour just for an oil filter.

Pretty sure M1 filters are made by Champion Labs, right? They are owned by Fram.

Wix 51356
FYI: Napa Gold filters are made for them by Wix. The Napa # is 1356. The standard Napa filters are not made by Wix.

How about ebay, amazon or whatever? I mean i can't stand paying more than i should for anything, so i shop around (find free shipping, low prices), plan ahead, buy several of whatever (sonic care t-brushes, refrig water filters, auto air/oil filters, ammo, on and on...). Luck!

I stand corrected, I had to go look for myself but all the Napa Pro Select filters are made by Wix here in the USA. I think my confusion was from some a few years back that I got in that said "made in China."

Sure, if I had internet or planned ahead..ooops!!! LoL..Up here in Canada we have some pretty vast areas with little to no supplies or box stores at hand..In an emergency type scenario those options are void.

I swamped my bike 9 hrs away from where I live and was stuck with Canadian tire do to hrs of operation (dealers up here dont exactly have "good" hrs of operation). I bought 6 fram filters to change out the oil and I have 1 left so that's what I'm using for now. Our wallmarts do not carry those purolator filters any where that I can see and frankly I would trust fram from Canadian tire before anything from wallmart.

Ill replace with Polaris OEM when I get to the dealer, but for now its fram.
