Montana ATV Rides

Some friends came up here a couple weeks ago and we went and rode the Blacktail/Wild Bill National OHV Trail here in Lakeside, MT. The trail system itself isn't very long, maybe about 15 miles at the most, but the rocky and rough condition of the trail keeps your speed quite low (5-10 mph, but slower most of the time). It has several obstacles along the trail including tank traps, logs, etc. It also has bypasses for each obstacle in the event you don't want to try it.

The Wild Bill is really designed for full size 4X4's such as Jeeps, but it's also quite fun for ATV's and probably UTV's. I got hung up on one log obstacle, because I still have my snowplow mount on my ATV, so my buddy pulled me out with his Arctic Cat.

Well, onto the pics. Hope you enjoy them!

We made a rest stop at the top of Blacktail Mtn (6660'). This is looking east toward the Mission Mtn. range and Glacier National Park

This is where I got hung up on that damn log

And of course my buddy had to get a pic to rub it in LOL

Of course we packed a couple coolers, a BBQ a roll up table and chairs and had a picnic lunch out in the sticks. We had my .44 magnum handy since we were in the middle of Black and Grizzly bear country and there were plenty of huckleberries and good burgers and hot dogs around

This was shortly after my buddy (on the silver Arctic Cat) rolled his machine on its side. We were debating making a near vertical climb with all the stuff we were packing on the back of our ATV's. We decided to do it and no problems.

Looks like a pretty good time. Thanks for the pics.
Great pics! Always fun to see how people ride in the different areas. I cant wait for this weekend. Going up north to WI for a 250+ mile run. Should be nice with all the leaves turning.

Sounds like a fun ride you have planned!
I'm thinking my wife and I are gonna go on a ride around here this weekend and explore some old silver mines I know about. There are about 5 or 6 in this area and we found one the last time we went, but it's on private property, so we couldn't get close enough to take pics of the old buildings, etc. That ride was 115 miles, so this one may be a little more.
My buddy and I are planning a 900 mile ride we hope to do next summer around Montana and Idaho (We hope to find a few sponsors for that ride LOL)
Looks like you had a good time. Were those rocks in the hills very hard on the tires? Looked like some sharp rocks.

Thanks for the pics.
I see in Montana you can still get arctic cats,,,LOL.. Looked like a good time!

There were a lot sharp rocks, shale, etc. I was expecting a flat or 2 in the group, but it never happened. I'm starting to think my Bighorns are bullet proof LOL.

Yep, Arctic Cats are still plentiful here. My friends wife just got a 2011 2up and it's actually pretty nice (for an AC LOL).
I've got this decal on the back of my PoPo

But it didn't work out this time around when he pulled me off the log. I've gotten myself off that log in the past on my own, but he was too fast with the tow strap and camera this time:lmao:
Of course he thinks I'm an :asshole: because I have the decal, but it's all in good fun!

I know the XTR's are NOT! I will never buy them again.. The sidewalls are weak and blow out.. I even sent an email to ITP, got no response

I don't have any experience with ITP tires. I replaced my stock tires in 2008 with a set of Swamp Fox tires and they lasted about 4 months. I went out one day and 3 of them were flat! I had less than 100 miles on them!! I put Slime in the tires and they wouldn't hold pressure. So, I went to the tire dealer where I bought them and turns out they were rotted out from ozone. I guess it was a manufacturing defect. Anyway, the dealer gave me credit for the tires, I got the Bighorns and just paid the difference.... I've been waiting for these to wear out so I can try out some of the Pit Bull Rockers, but these damn tires aren't wearing out LOL.
Looks like a good trail Matt. If you get a little farther west we have some fun ATV Poker Rides. WestEnd ATV Association puts on a ride and usually there are a couple more. Trout Creek has a good run up there and there are miles of roads to ride. I like riding up to the high mountain lakes in the summer to camp out and fish.

Me and a friend in Missoula have sent the West End club a couple emails asking about the club and never got any replies, so we figured the club was dead lol... We've ridden in Wallace a bunch, but haven't checked out much between here and there lol
Sorry that our guy dropped the ball.He has been having some health issues from what I hear and hasn't been on top of things. The owner of the O'Aces is a member and the folks at the Montana Bar in Saltese. If your passing through you can stop and ask about riding. The $50,000 Bar has free RV hookups in back for campers who want to stay and ride. You can pick up a copy of our snowmobile clubs trail map,the trails are about the same for ATVs with a couple of exceptions.(gated FS roads in summer). The old Milwaukee railroad bed is our main trail along the river and then you can branch off on a number of side roads. The Stateline trail between MT and ID is a great ride!
A Lolo national forest map will show you what is open and any restrictions.
No worries about the club... I know life gets in the way sometimes lol.
We've been wanting to ride from the Silver Dollar to Wallace for a while. Might do that ride next summer.
I've got a buddy (on another ATV forum) and we're trying to get a "end of summer" ride going over around the Pipestone riding area in Butte in a few weeks when I get back from work in ND. I can PM you the details if you'd be interested....
Thanks Matt, let me know when you get the ride planned.I have mostly ridden in the Big Hole area over that way.My favorite place is the Wise River country.
I spoke to one of our club board members Sat about the lack of attention being given (or not given) the website. He said the website is being turned over to someone for a redesign. So it might be in limbo for a bit? I also received an e-mail from our club Pres who is resigning as of today.
Hopefully we can get all this sorted out and have a new/improved website to help folks learn more about us and our area.
Stay safe over there in the 'patch'. I have several friends working over there.2 are off work right now due to injuries and 1 had a close call with a lightning bolt! Blew the tires and wheels off the front axle and melted and blew the cords out of the tires on the drivers!

That seems to be the problem with organized clubs in general. Things happen or don't happen. At one time, I kicked around the idea of starting a club up here in the Flathead, but decided against it because I think it would be more of a hassle than it's worth.... We belonged to the North Idaho ATV club for a couple years, but never really got a chance to go ride with them.

I'll PM you the info for the ride, because I'm not sure if cross linking to another ATV forum is allowed here and don't want to get into trouble... Invite as many as you'd like! The more the merrier lol....
Hey, I see you have a ride coming up the 15th. We have one the 29th if you or anyone else up that way want to drop down for a fun day. The Trout Creek ride last weekend was a good one.

Thanks for the pics. I found some new places to ride from this topic. The Silver Dollar Bar is not far from us. We mostly ride on the other side of the pass.
We have some great riding right out our back doors don't we? I was getting fired up to hit the trails and look for sheds....now a foot of new snow and cold expected for several days. Oh well....spring will be here eventually.
That is some beautiful country for sure. Eventually I want to get a Go-Pro camera and just mount it and set it to take a pic like every 15 seconds. See what I get out on rides, then if there is an easy way to upload them on this site... and if more people did similar ... we'd have a bunch of pics of riding, scenery, well non-sense too I'm sure but...
