Hey everyone... new member here from NEPA. Just bought a new Sportsman 850 Premium a few months ago, my first quad! My friend who's a lifetime ATV'r gave me the bug and am loving it so far... close to my 25hr but I had a starting issue with it a bit ago. Long story short, after doing some troubleshooting I took it back to the dealer and the only thing they found was a loose neutral cable to the battery which (knock on wood) so far seems to have solved things. Anyway, while I was tinkering with it I went to spray some starting fluid in the intake and accidentally put some in, what I only found out later to be, the clutch intake.

So to also introduce myself, my education is as an electronics engineer. I work in commercial electrical construction, and have also worked as a controls/mechanical industrial maintenance tech. So I'm not an idiot when it comes to 'how stuff works' in general, but we all have our moments lol.

Anyway, my main question is, can someone explain (as you would to a 5 year old/golden retriever) what the purpose of having an intake on the centrifugal clutch is? Just general cooling? And is it driven by some type of built in fan on the clutch? Also, would my dumb*ss spraying ether into it hurt the clutch/CVT/belt in any appreciable way? I've actually scoured the internet but I feel like this is one of those questions that's so simple nobody has ever asked it before haha.

Appreciate the help and look forward to the forum and many more rides!

The primary clutch has blades on the back to move air through the clutch cover to cool the clutches and belt. Excessive heat will cause belts to fail in short order. See pic below.
The clutch cover has intake and exhaust ducting to facilitate the above-mentioned air flow. #9 is the intake where you sprayed starting fluid (won't hurt a thing) and #8 is the exhaust.
I'd suggest you get a service manual to familiarize yourself with your new machine.
