Howdy, just picked up a 2002 Sportsman 700. It’s my first atv and being 17 years old she could use a little bit of tlc. I did a complete fluid replace and noticed the antifreeze that was in it looked new but just wanted to replace for peace of mind. As I filled it with new antifreeze, a layer of oil? floated to the top. Could this be my head gasket failing or the water pump seals. I see no white smoke coming out of the exhaust and the oil looked dark not like it was coolant contaminated.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks,Ryan

As coolant degrades, sludge will form in the system - what looks like oil may well be some of the chemicals that have separated from the solution and mixed with oxidation - flush the system and install new low or no silicate formula powersports coolant - I prefer Honda HP and Maxima Coolanol coolants for my engines. With new coolant in a clean system, check it periodically for contamination. You might find the film does not reappear.
