I have a 01 sportsman 500. I have 15 volts at idle but when I begin to rev it up the voltage drops fast and the lights barely light. the battery does not seem to hold a good charge so I bought a new one I just don't want to fry the new one right off the bat. any ideas?

put in the new battery, no problems with voltage drop anymore. seems to maintain a constant voltage at any rpm now. guess time will tell.
THANKS

The battery is a primary part of the charging system. It acts not only as a big pot to hold charge but also lets the regulator know how much voltage to send. You experienced what people have found out when they try and run without a battery and that is over voltage. You just didn't have to replace all your bulbs.
