I have a 97 xplorer with no power to dash lights or 4x4 switch. Everything else works fine. Not sure where to look????

Welcome to the jungle!!!! Have you checked the fuses??

On the older models the CBs or fusible links are in a bag.

The problem is with the shifter switch - power comes in on the red/wht wire (brn is ground)
White Product Rectangle Black Font

When the switch is working; 12v passes through the neutral light to ground and illuminates it - when in reverse, the reverse lamp lights and when in forward, power is sent to the AWD switch - when the switch is in the on position, 12v is sent the the AWD coils and the AWD lamp.

It has nothing to do with fuses or shorts (shorts blow fuses), but it could be a broken red/wht wire not getting 12v to the shifter switch.

Hope this actually helps solve your problem.

Took the shifter apart,it was full of muddy water, looks like it’s been that way for awhile.
No wonder why it wouldn’t work properly and was shorted out
