The 850 will have a lot more power. Depends on what type of rider you are. If your a sporty racer you will want the 850. If your driving around your farm or taking the kids for rides things like that the 700 is plenty, even in the trails its no slouch, its just not a crazy 1000cc machine, its more than enough for your average recreational rider.
In a nut shell they are totally different machines, size, storage, power, suspension.

In my opinion, the Yamaha 700 is very reliable all around but lacks in suspension. The Polaris 850 has the best suspension of all the ATV brands and more power. I looked at both closely when I bought my 850, I knew the trade offs well when I bought. I knew my 850 was going to require more maintenance than the Yamaha, but it was worth it to me and I’m very happy with my decision 3 years later.

If i wont ride it as much and want less maintainence should i just go with the 700. And is the 700 fast?

Yes 700 less maintenance, but less motor, suspension, storage. I would compare the 700 to a toyota tacoma and the 850 to a ford raptor.
Obviously if your driving around the farm the tacoma is what you want, if your racing in the desert, you want the raptor.
Yes 700 a little less maintenance, Polaris you will have to grease wheel bearings and replace bushings. That is if you ride wet and hard, if you ride dry and slow they are going to be similar, change your fluids and airfilter and that's about it.

No comparison in power or top end speed. Grizz is done at 62 mph. 850 runs 78 mph all day long
Grizzly very reliable, great resale and over 200 lbs lighter

All depends what your are looking for

I spent a lot of $$ and 4 years building a 75 hp 843cc Grizz engine and a stock 850 would walk it

I have a sportsman xp 1000. My friend Donna has the Grizzly. LOVES them....both her's are 700's...first time we went riding, she was concerned about running out of fuel after 75 miles....I still had more than 3/4 of a tank left, had power over her for days, and wasn't nearly as beat up as she was after a day of riding.....Polaris for me.....

You rode a Sportsman 1000 for 75 miles and still had 3/4 of a tank left?

The last time I went riding with my 850, we rode something like 40 miles and I'm pretty sure I had less than a half tank left, and I started with a full tank. I'm talking even the filler neck was full right to just an inch or two below the cap.

What's everyone else getting for mileage on their 850/1000 machines?

Depending on how/where I ride, my range is 150-200 miles on a tank....yes, you read that right..........The Alpine loop here goes over 12,000 feet in elevation twice, and is 63 miles long.....I use just over half a tank on that ride, with a passenger....never rode it solo so I'm guessing a lot less then....

How is that possible when the rest of us are getting 60-75 miles on a tank?

I have no answer for you other than what actually happens when I ride....I carry extra fuel just in case, but have never had to use it on the trail.....I think altitude might have a little to do with it as well too....I live at 8600 ft and most of the riding I do is at that or higher altitudes.....All I know is if I was only getting that many miles on a tank, I'd be looking for a different machine......

I see now, high altitude does increase MPG, but also decreases power, which wouldn’t be so noticeable on an 850 -1K.

I still have plenty of power at altitude, which is another reason I went for the 1000 and not a smaller one....but you'll see all sizes on trails here
