Just put on the new auto-stop upgrade for my 3500 winch. Why? Well....mostly because I thought it would be useful when plowing to stop the winch before it hits the frame and over-torques it. But, also bought it because I got caught up in a buying/excitement frenzy with my new 570. :)

The one really stupid thing about it is that the stopper (with the magnets) is super loose, like three times wider than the rope. So I'll have to use some electrical tape to position it right where I want it. I will say that the hawse Fairlead is one of the nicer ones I've seen, well polished and very rounded. So many of them are way to right-angled with just a tiny rounded corner.

When the magnets get close to the fairlead it trips a switch that stops the winch. So, you can't over tighten it. I'm planning on mounting the rubber stopper just at the point that the plow gets near the top.

Some will say "well any idiot should know when to stop winching in". yeah, that's true in normal circumstances. But when you're out in the cold, when it's blowing and snowing, and you're focused on backing up, etc......you can lose track and stress the winch by over torquing up on the plow and bend push tubes, etc. Been there, done that.

Thanks for this. I plan on getting the Auto Stop too. I asked in a thread about it but didn't really get anyone that has one. Glad to see you've got one. There really wasn't much on them even by Googling them. I did have someone say the rubber/magnet was loose. Tape would probably be the best because I figured knotting the roper would weaken it(?).

Exactly how was it wired? I know you take off the roller fairlead and put the hawse on but where do the wires go? I have the Polaris HD #2500 BTW.

The 2500 and the 3500 install the same way. You get a wiring unit in the kit that has 4 leads:
- One connects to the fairlead
- 2 connect to the existing winch thumb controller (routing the winch controller through the unit. one in from the controller, one out to the winch)
- Last one connects to power/and ground - by the terminal block. This was the tricky part for me, cuz you want it plugged into "keyed" power only, not the red/hot terminal block itself since that is always hot. The instructions that came with kit are very vague, but did mention to look for an orange/white wire the would be for "keyed" power. Finally, I saw them - on the 2015 there are two pre-wired open orange/white wires, just waiting to plug something into. Done!

I've been thinking about getting the auto stop for my sportsman but I have a warn vantage 3000 winch. This setup should work with any winch I'm assuming. Looks like basically easy wire connections. There should not be anything different from a warn to a polaris winch. Does anyone know if I am correct.

It's a hundred bucks which isn't cheap and if I was only using my winch for pull outs or such I probably wouldn't buy one but I'm like Guilow and plowing. You know after running the winch in and out dozens of time you'll eventually not be paying attention.

Just a reminder - synthetic rope required. The metal cable won't do well with the magnets. :shocked1:

Exactly. And with my old winch, sometime the thumb control actually STUCK ON in super cold weather even after I stopped pressing it.

What about the magnet portion itself, can this be purchased if you ruin the one you get with the fairlead or do you have to purchase it as a package, I seem to not be able to locate the magnet itself.....HELP
Don't know, but I've wondered the same thing. I got my plow caught once, and broke a strap. Had that magnet on there and it went rolling down the hill. Made me think - where would I get another one of those. But I assume a I could cobble something up. A magnet is a magnet. Maybe I could just get a regular winch stopper, cut it apart, and glue some magnets in there. Can't be that hard.

magnet stop

I believe your idea of a build your own could/should work, I am going to try the same thing...........Great Idea....!

The other thing I am looking for is some kind of level wind for the winch the cord or cable does f' up sometimes and it's a pain in the butt, they make them for large reels and larger winches so why don't they make one for the smaller winches?

Being proprietary is :bsflag:

Make sure you don't loose the magnetic rubber bump stop. I did, it's $40 to replace it !!!!
