I'm having some troubles with my Polaris 400 Sportsman HO. Can someone tell me what oil on the recoil starter rope might mean.

Oil or grease? If it is oil your machine is probably leaking through the crank seal, which I can not remember ever hearing of a seal leaking on that motor. Keep in mind they grease the recoil and the starter bendix and if you get water inside the recoil housing they will mix and make your rope seem like it is full of oil. I would pull the recoil of and inspect everything.

The recoil rope is saturated with oil. I've never noticed this before. I'll pull the cover and look at it tonight after work.

On another note...If the battery is completely dead will it give problems running the machine. It's not fuel injection but it still won't run and I know the battery is suspect.

The machine will run fine with a dead battery. Do not remove the battery as this is a ground and running the machine with out one it will cause electrical failures.
