What brands or specs of coolants are suitable for my 2017 Sportsman 850 instead of the Polaris OEM?

Thanks.

Evans is good, but is an expensive waterless coolant. The system has to be flushed with a prep fluid before the coolant is installed and then when the system is filled with the Evans coolant, it cannot be topped of with water or other coolant. Typically I sell a bottle of prep fluid and two bottles of coolant to first time users of Evans. The prep fluid flushes the system of previous coolant and water, then the coolant is installed and the second bottle is for subsequent topping off or refill after a service.

Automotive coolant (NAPA, Zerex, Prestone, Walmart and the like) are silicate based coolant which will damage the mechanical water pump seal of powersports engines. Automotive water pump seals need the silicate to condition the seals for long life. Powersports water pump seals are constructed differently and the silicates will damage the seal. I use Honda, Maxima Coolanol, Engine Ice, Polaris and other brands of low or no silicate distilled deionized water diluted coolant.

Of course there will be the dissidents who proclaim that they have used Prestone for years and never had a water pump seal fail, but talk to the guy who bought that Sportsman with Dexcool in it and complains that the seals won't last more than a year. Then he has me rebuild the water pump PROPERLY (not just replace the seal), I fill it with the correct type of coolant and he never has a pump seal for the rest of the time he owns the vehicle.

I have liquid cooled 89 Honda Shadow VT1100, 03 Suzuki LTZ400, 04 CRF250, 96 CR250R and a 99 Polaris Sport 400L - only the Sport 400L has had the water pump rebuilt and it was not due to a failure it was part of a routine engine rebuild.

Of course, not all failures are caused by the type of coolant and the correct coolant will not prevent all failures. On KTM motorcycles, ATV's and KTM powered Arctic Cat and Polaris vehicles, the water pump may fail due to engine problems. The water pump is driven by the camshaft and cylinder head problems caused by heat, lack of lubrication and or extended idling may cause the water pump seal to fail prematurely.

At any rate, a low or no silicate formula of coolant is best for the liquid cooled powersports engines.

I’ve been using the Polaris coolant . I guess it’s too expensive?

when I first got my machine it “ drank “ some coolant or something because it got low right away . I topped it off and now it’s been steady since .

I just purchased a 2023 570. I did not check the coolant level at the dealer. After putting around the yard for a bit I put her away. the next day I noticed the overflow bottle and the markings to which I was below the minimum. I opened the silver radiator cap. Coolant was not up to the cap. I filled the overflow between the min and max and added coolant through the radiator fill cap basically to the top. Is that where you should fill to or did I overfill?

I appreciate any suggestions/ information

You absolutely MUST run ONLY AMSOIL COOLANT, or the world will come to an end, your machine will blow up the sun, and life as we know it will vote eternally for Xiden!!!!

I happen to be an Amsoil dealer so I can hook you up.......🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

According to product documentation, the Napa Green is low silicate.

NAPA Antifreeze/Coolant is a conventional green low silicate antifreeze containing inhibitors providing protection from freezing, overheating, rust and corrosion when used as recommended. This product has been formulated for use in automobiles and light duty trucks and protects all cooling system metal surfaces, including aluminum

OK - products change and NAPA green is fine - just check the label. The only reason I personally would not use it in my toys is the difficulty in finding deionized distilled water. Distilled water is easy, you can collect and filter it from an air conditioning unit or buy it from most any grocery or department store.

Hi, I had the same situation as xpialidocious with my new 2021 Sportsman 570 EPS - the coolant dropped to the bottom of the header tank within 1 hour of running.
The local dealer didn't have Polaris Antifreeze 50/50 Premix 2880514 and said they just put 'BLUE' antifreeze in all the vehicles they maintain!
Anyway, that wasn't acceptable to me and, after a lot of investigation, I came up with: PRESTONE LOYAF2100LGBA Coolant / Antifreeze which I believe is the original Polaris fill - Its exactly the same colour, consistency and 'feel' as the original and is the OEM fill in many vehicles produced in the USA, being a modern OAT type.
According to Prestone, its also fully compatible with ALL other types / colours and will last 10 years / 150K miles...
Its also very economic and conveniently stocked in Amazon!
I'm very happy its correct and don't want to pay the ridiculous prices for the various OEM branded types with their rainbow of colours and specifications pushed to consumers with a load of voodoo nonsense produced by the OEM marketing departments.

Cool .. but double check the below statement by latebird .

Honda recently change their coolant from green (Type 1 ethylene glycol) to blue (Type 2 propylene glycol) and will mix with each other compatibly - whether ethylene glycol (poisonous) or propylene glycol (non toxic) makes no difference.

What ever you choose it should be readily available. I sell (all pre-mixed with distilled deionized or demineralized water): Honda (blue), Maxima Coolanol (green), Engine Ice (blue, non-toxic, biodegradable, protects to -7 degrees F, 256 degree F boiling point, phosphate free), Silkolene Mag Cool (mono ethylene glycol, nitrate free, Organic Acid Technology (OAT) blue, compatible with magnesium engine components), Silkolene Pro Cool (propylene) silicate free, Silkolene Pro CCA Ultra (for racing engines $20 a liter (1.05 quart) - to the best of my knowledge is blue (I sell it, I haven't used it)), Evans Waterless Coolant (proprietary coolant is ready to use, no water required, will not build vapor pressure, no silicates, no corrosion or electrolysis, lifetime, over 375 degree F boiling point and freezing point is below -40 degrees. Made in USA), Twin Air Ice Flow Coolant (blue, mono propylene glycol, phosphate and silicate free, non-toxic, OAT and biodegradeable), VP Racing Stay Frosty Race Ready Coolant (light blue, 100% water with specialized wetting agents that increase the water's ability to transfer heat from the metal parts to the coolant, reduces engine temperatures by up to 100 degrees F compared to conventional glycol based coolant, NO FREEZE PROTECTION, maximum cooling, non-toxic, biodegradable chemically stable reverse osmosis water), VP Racing Stay Frosty Hi Performance coolant (light purple, ready to use, minimal freeze protection, polypropylene glycol, no freezing point claimed or advertised - is coolant only and will freeze at 32 degrees, but not solid, stays slushy - needs to be drained if engine will be subjected to temps below 32 degrees F), Motorex M3.0 (green, silicate, phosphate and nitrate free ethylene glycol, protects to -27 degrees F), Motorex 5.0 (etthylene glycol formula, protects to -27 degrees F, 3 year service life, phosphate and nitrate free).

What is available in your area and how much do you want to spend?
