'02 scrammie 400l 4x4

I'll try my best to explain the situation, this quad makes a metallic rattle at low rpm, nothing when given a lil throttle. If I rock the primary back and forth a few degrees, maybe 15 or 20, i hear a clunk-clunk... clunk-clunk as I rotate it back and forth, the way you would a steering wheel looking for bad tie rods. Now if i make complete revolutions I hear nothing, only hear it when idling or rotating as described. What it isn't is the piston, I have jug off for re-ringing and noise is still there. Not the clutch buttons as cluctch is tight and i took it off. Not the starter drive rattling around, I took cover off and held starter drive solid while rocking primary back and forth, and not the rod cuz I pulled on it while rocking and noise was still there, also rod is pretty snug.
I fear I may be hearing the counter balance gear having a lil lash to it. I know it shouldnt but when i got this quad the counter balance oil was low by a couple OZ's so I lean in that direction a bit. FWIW I rebuilt a 2000 scrammie and not one odd noise comes out of it. So should I tear it down further or put my rings and gaskets in and on and keep riding this bike? What could my noise be? I can make a vid no prob if need be. If it is the counter balance with play in it can it be shimmed or how does one go about remedying that situation. Perhaps impeller is loose? I dunno but I hope one of you out there knows.
Good advice welcomed and THX in advance.

crank nut

seems the slotted crank nut was only finger tight. Factory must be unaware of the existance of thread locker, my thanks to COOKIES for posting the manuals I'm using. It only covers to 98 and mines an '02 but it doesn't seem like a lot has changed engine wise. I'll post when when problem is definitely fixed, but the noise is nearly gone with just a half a**ed tightening of the nut.
