I have a 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4 . The rear shock is so spongy. I am considering a replacement idea and not rebuilding it. Would an ordinary shock work or is the resistance and travel length an issue? Does anyone know off hand know what the length of the rear shock is between the mounting brackets ?

Ordinary shock? You mean like off a Ford F150? Sure it will work if you can devise a way to put the spring on it. Length is easy - take it off and measure it or jack it up so the rear end is not on the ground and measure it in place - it's usually an even number of millimeters or inches, but the OAL is not as important as the travel distance.
