Hey Folks, I have a 2016 Polaris Sportsman Touring 570 EPS with 4x4 drivetrain. When I start my rig up and shift into reverse or drive and start to accelerate there is brief pause in engagement of the tranny and it hits quite hard once it engages. Is this normal with the shaft driven atv's? I have a belt drive Trail boss that doesn't do that. I only have 500 miles on it and its done that since day 1.
Any help would be appreciated.

most 570 have some gear lash noise when accelerating from a dead stop but no hard engagement like you have. Most members complain about a rattle/ clunking noise but your issue is different .
Our 570 is belt drive :)

Thanks for the reply, yeah I know these rigs (Polaris) run on a centrifugal clutch driven by a belt, I was referring to shaft driven vs. chain driven on the axles. Its almost like the RPM's are not high enough for the clutch to engage the transfer case. If I slowly bring the RPM's up I can get it to engage with out the sudden engagement (bang). When I am traveling down a steep embankment, if you let off and on the throttle, you get that pause in engagement as well, its a clunk noise that is well defined. But on level ground and ripping it up with the throttle on and off it does not do it. It just may be the way Polaris designed the 4x4, I just didn't want to wait until my 5 yr warranty was up and have the tranny take a shit.

To me it almost sounds like your clutches were not shimmed right, and they're engaging hard on the belt. Just something to look at. You could try driving it without the clutch cover on to see if it revs up a ways before the belt actually engages.

It is normal for a gradual rise in the RPM to engage the clutch more smoothly than a sudden hit of the throttle. If you take the clutch cover off and watch the engagement you can see if it is sticking some which causes the sudden engagement. As the RPM goes up, the weights fly which moved the primary sheaves closer together and grabs the belt. Although some seem to "grab" it shouldn't be the "bang" you are describing. Sounds like something is sticking in the clutching.

Your 4X4 should not engage unless the computer senses a small percentage of slip in the rear wheels. So most of the time, the 4X4 isn't working. Just the rear wheels

Well I am taking her in to service in 2 weeks to have the the fuel rail recall fixed and the block off heat shield installed, so I will have them look at this as well. I'm glad I got some advice from 570 owners and not just relying on the answers I get from the service department. I was I afraid I was going to hear "oh that's normal". So thanks guys for all the great info.
