I am working on a 2002 sportsman 500 HO I can get spark and the atv starts and runs fine if I hold the black wire/kill wire on Cdi to a ground then release it from a ground it starts but if I touch it back to ground it kills atv like it’s supposed to I have disconnected the speedometer black wire it will run without it hooked up but I still have to ground it out first then release it it will start. So I can start it but it isn’t making any sense . Any help greatly appreciate it.

Sound like you have a weak stator - suppressing the spark allows the charge on the CDI unit to build then when the kill wire is removed from ground, the CDI unit has a good strong first spark - when the engine starts, then the charge voltage is higher and it runs normally - it's only the initial spark charge voltage that is below the threshold for spark.

Check the peak voltage of the CDI charge coil (typically about 45 volts) at normal engine cranking speed - sometimes a stronger battery spinning the starter motor faster may gelp it to start with out the touch and un-touch procedure you are using. An alternate method would be to short the red/blk wire to the red/wht wire at the key switch or LH switch and use the engine stop run button to connect blk to ground and while cranking, switch from the stop position to the run position.

Good luck

Hi thanks for the reply,my key switch harness doesn’t have red/white only 2 red/black and 2 solid red. Also I tried checking the voltage on cdi coil wire didn’t have any luck my meter is just jumping around. And this evening the crazy thing started 10 times in a row rode it for 30 minutes turned it off and same thing no spark. Thanks for your help

You have a very unique machine - better get rid of it or put it on a pedestal - or find out exactly what year and model you have - they made 9 different models of 500 in 02
